Dear Apple: Please keep Siri out of my TV

While pervasive voice-activated computing may be part of our future, there will still be room for good old buttons here and there—including remote controls and keyboards. So, while asking your TV to show you the latest episode of Arrested Development is undoubtedly cool, it is simply not likely to happen anytime in the near future.

iCloud feature rollout shows a new side of Apple

With iCloud, however, Apple appears to have learned from its past mistakes, and is instead performing a very deliberately planned, gradual introduction of new features. This approach, it would seem, is carefully calibrated to make sure the final product is prepared to live up to its iCloud moniker, rather than failing to get off the ground and being mocked as iFog.

iOS 4.3 Beta brings new features

Apple has seeded iOS 4.3 beta to developers. The beta version of the iOS confirms the rumor about the Personal Hotspot feature being available to all iPhone carriers. It also brings numerous new and useful features to iPad, such as Airplay video streaming from apps to compatible devices, new Multitouch gestures, an option to set what the switch near the volume buttons does (mute or rotation lock) and the aforementioned Personal Hotspot. The beta is available to developers for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, iPod touch (3rd and 4th gens) and a separate file for the newest AppleTV.

New Apple TV already jailbroken

Even before the Apple TV has made it into the hands of customers around the nation, a jailbreak has become available for it. Since the device has been confirmed to be running iOS 4.1, the developer of the SHAtter exploit, @pod2g, has been able to decrypt the key to mount the image. In less technical terms, this means that the Apple TV may be able to do all sorts of neat things other than what Apple software will allow.

Whatever your reason, be sure to check in with us at 1:00 p.m. EDT (10:00 a.m. PDT) for live coverage and in-depth follow up articles.

Apple’s iTV to stream Netflix

Apple has been rumored to be revamping the Apple TV during tomorrow’s special event, and now Bloomberg is attempting to add some details before that happens. Their sources say that Apple’s new set top box, possibly renamed the iTV, will support Netflix and its Instant Streaming service. What they don’t venture a guess to is how…

Apple to live stream tomorrow’s special event

No joke. Apple has announced that they’ll be providing a live video stream of tomorrow’s special event starting at 10:00 AM PDT on Apple.com. But there’s a catch, you’ll need to have an iDevice with iOS 3.0+ or Mac computer running Snow Leopard with Safari to watch. No problem, right? There’s a first time for everything, I suppose.

Rumor: Next Apple TV to be $99, foster cloud storage, use iPhone OS 4.0

Some interesting rumors about what the next version of the Apple TV may include are now floating around the Web. According to a source “very close to Apple,” the device will contain internal components much like that of the iPhone—from the A4 chip to only 16GB internal memorybut, it will also be capable of 1080p HD and offer a Time Machine connection. The best part, though, is a potential price drop to $99.

Boxee unveils the Boxee Beta and Boxee Box

Boxee has launched the next version of their incredibly popular platform, Boxee Beta. At their packed unveiling event today in New York, Boxee showed off the brand new user-interface and released details on the Boxee Box, built by D-Link. The Boxee Beta will be available to some early access users, but should be available to the public on January 7th at the upcoming CES event.

A suggestion for the Apple TV

Apple’s billion-apps-sold countdown has gotten me thinking; why can’t I run some of my apps on my Apple TV? Why am I limited to a 3 inch screen for playing fun games? What about Pandora and my NPR Public Radio tuner? Those would sound great on my home theater system, so why is it stuck on my iPhone? The AppleTV has languished a bit, but it has star potential as a central conduit for digital media and apps!
