Breakout Boost+ brings 100 new levels to iOS

Breakout: Boost+

Back in December, we took a look at Breakout: Boost for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, a modern version its seminal brick-breaking game from way pack. It was a pretty good app, but it was limited by the lack of a mathematical symbol. Atari has corrected that with the release of Breakout: Boost+, and that + = 100 new levels.

iPhone Appidemic: Breakout Boost

There may not be a jailbreak somewhere in this town, but Atari lets you have a go with Breakout Boost. Atari sends you back to the arcade, but you don’t need quarters this time. Breakout Boost is as much fun as the first arcade version. It’s a straightforward game that pits you against the machine. The gameplay gets faster as you progress, but just enough to keep your competitive spirit engaged and wanting more.

iPhone Appidemic: Asteroids Gunner

A rolling stone may gather no moss, but a big ol’ space boulder can kill you. Strap in and power up your weapons – here comes Asteroids Gunner! Where the original was a geometric line drawing of a space ship and a screen full of the outlines of rocks, this version is eye candy with planets, stars and some interstellar gas to keep the background interesting.

ThinkGeek now accepting iCADE preorders

ThinkGeek is now accepting preorders on the iCADE. If you aren’t already aware of its awesomeness, it’s a mini arcade cabinet that functions as the world’s coolest iPad stand and wireless arcade controller. Just slide your iPad in and load up a compatible game (including Atari’s recent Greatest Hits collection) and you’re instantly the coolest geek around.

Free Apps Roundup for April 8th, 2011

This week on the Free Apps Roundup: it’s games week. I found a ton of free games that are sure to keep you occupied for some time to come, but many of them are free for a limited time only. This week also saw the release of The Onion’s official iPad app, a great cartoonifying video app, an ad-only app from Apple (as if we needed more ads) and a live streaming ESPN app for all the sports fans out there.

Atari’s Greatest Hits now available on App Store

The best of retro gaming is finally available on the App Store. Yes, Atari’s Greatest Hits is now available for download. It’s a free app that comes with Pong, but also makes an additional 99 games available to you via app purchases. There are 18 Classic Atari Arcade Games and 92 Atari 2600 Games (obviously some overlap). Games can be purchased in 4-game packs for $0.99 each, or get them all for $14.99. It’s a good day to have an iOS device.

ThinkGeek announces special edition iCADE

Just as promised by ION Audio, ThinkGeek has announced their special edition of the iCADE complete with retro graphics. Functionally, it’s the same as ION Audio’s recently announced iCADE. It also costs the same at $99.99. But the outside has a bit different vibe, and you get points for supporting other geeks online right?

Breakout clones; get ‘em while they last

It appears that Atari’s legal department has insisted that Apple remove at least three Breakout and Pong clone games from the App Store, according to Touch Arcade.

The first games to go will be BreakClassic and BreakTouch 3D, which are both very similar to Atari’s Breakout. Next up is Super Pong 2 which you can likely guess is a Pong clone.

Some very unfortunate news, I have been asked to remove SuperPong 2 from the App Store at the request of Atari Interactive due to infringements against the pong and breakout copyrights.

If you remember the game Tris at the App Store, then this should sound all too familiar. These developers don’t have the money to take Atari to court, so these apps will be leaving us soon. But, as of the writing of this article, they are still available. If you want any of these, get them while they last.

Product links after the break.

Review: Neverwinter Nights 2

Aspyr Media keeps role-playing alive on the Mac by taking over the wildly popular Neverwinter Nights franchise. Neverwinter Nights 2 is bigger, shinier, and an engrossing RPG experience, but it’s not without its share of problems. The new graphics engine gets poorer performance without actually looking any better, the inventory management system bogs down the more »
