Amazon has released another one of its iOS apps specifically for college students, calling it Amazon Student. The purpose of the app is to allow students to trade in their used textbooks and other items such as DVDs, games, electronics, and more towards Amazon gift cards. A user simply scans the barcode on the item(s) they’d like to trade in and the app will calculate trade-in offers based on what they are and how much they’re worth.

Barcode scanners are a consumer’s best friend and a retail shop’s worst nightmare. With the advent of this technology, users have been able to scan items at almost any store and instantly have price comparisons, reviews, and other helpful information about the product before they buy it. It’s no wonder, then, that Shop Savvy, a barcode scanner, is in five of the top Black Friday iPhone applications this year.
