Boxee updated with support for Netflix streaming and more…
The folks at boxee have update their fantastic media application to support Netflix streaming on the Mac, among other things.
The good news is that Netflix works just like you’d expect it to on the Mac. There is full support for Instant Queue, recommendations, browsing, searching and Netflix Watch Instantly.
The bad news is that Netflix is only currently supported on the Mac. The Apple TV’s processor just couldn’t handle it. But that’s not to say that future updates won’t support it, because they’re still trying.
But let’s not let Netflix claim the whole update. The newest alpha update to boxee also includes…
Boxee named “America’s Next Top Gadget”
Hey you know what would be great? If there was a way to play Hulu without going to the website. Or while we’re at it wishing, why not CBS and Comedy Central too? Yeah, that would be great. If only it were possible…
Wait what? It is possible? I can watch Hulu and CBS on my Apple TV… like full episodes, movies and clips and stuff? Seriously?
Seriously. And all you need is to get America’s Next Top Model Gadget as selected by the Consumer Electronics Association.
Details and video after the break.
Add functionality to your Apple TV with Boxee
Earlier, we previewed the alpha of Boxee. It’s a version of the XBMC that runs on a Mac. You can use it to watch videos, subscribe to podcasts, get recommendations from its social features, etc. They call it a social media center. There really are a lot of great things you can do with Boxee, and it’s only in alpha. Today, you can add Apple TV support to Boxee’s already long list of features.
Appletell preview – Boxee (Alpha)
A number of years back (or even more recently), you might have heard of XBMC (XBox Media Center). XBMC was a way for XBox owners to mod their units into a fully capable media center. That project has continued to progress, and has moved on since its XBox roots. While XBMC is still available, there is an interesting offshoot based on it’s code called Boxee and it’s making its way to a Mac near you soon.
Why soon? Well, that’s because Boxee is still in Alpha, so there are still some wrinkles to iron out here. But that’s not to say it’s not already shaping up to be an awesome application. More on the program, and how you can participate in the alpha testing, after the break.
