iBooks 2 update

Apple has silently issued an update to their newly released iBooks 2 iOS application, bringing the software to v2.0.1. The update fixes a major bug which prevented iBooks Textbooks from opening within the application, causing a failure to play that left plenty of users unable to view the contents of the books. Apple quickly addressed the issue, bringing improved stability and software enhancements to iBooks 2.

Corona untethered jailbreak updated with iBooks fix

Corona iBooks fix

One (now former) problem with the untethered jailbreak (dubbed “Corona”) on iOS 5.0.1 was incompatibility with iBooks due to a sandboxing issue that prevented jailbreakers from using the app. Now, a new update to the Corona untethered jailbreak by comex has fixed this issue at the kernel level, finally giving jailbreakers access to iBooks just as if they hadn’t jailbroken their iDevice in the first place.

iBooks shown working on jailbroken iOS 5

Unfortunately, an issue that became noticeable during the beta stage of iOS 5 is that jailbreaking an iDevice with iOS 5 installed renders iBooks unusable. Since the problem arose, no one has managed to fix this problem. But developer iH8sn0w has managed to get iBooks working on his 4th generation iPod touch by getting around issue with sandbox patches.

Steve Jobs biography available now on iBooks and Kindle

For those of us who have been waiting for the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson, the ebook is now out for both iBooks and Amazon Kindle. Actually, the Kindle version came out a few minutes earlier than the iBooks version a few hours ago. The print version of Steve Jobs will start hitting traditional bookstores today.

Apple releases iBooks 1.3

Apple has updated its iBooks app for iOS to version 1.3, bringing some exciting new features for those who enjoy reading books on their iDevices. The most talked-about new feature is the “read-aloud” option which adds narrators’ voices that are capable of reading your purchased books to you (or perhaps your children).

The iBookstore is now on iTunes

Apple has added the iBookstore to iTunes, a needed addition that should have been available since the introduction of iBooks, in my personal opinion. The iBookstore now allows users to purchase and download books from within iTunes and sync them with your iDevices rather than only making it possible to purchase the books on the actual iDevice.

Steve Jobs authorizes biography, to be published in 2012

Somehow, Walter Isaacson succeeded where others have failed by managing to get Steve Jobs to agree to an official biography. The book will be titled “iSteve: The Book of Jobs.” Work on the biography started in 2009, but we’re only hearing of it now thanks to an announcement from Simon and Schuster. The book is scheduled to be released early in 2012. Further details were not available at this time.

Are video games, e-readers and other tech devices wrecking your sleep?

Evidently there’s more reason than aesthetics to prefer hard copy reading material to your iPhone, iPad, or laptop for late-evening fare. It’s National Sleep Awareness Week (March 7-13, 2011), and a new National Sleep Foundation (NSF) poll examines the effects of communications technology on sleep. The findings cast doubt on the concept of electronic reading media being an adequate replacement for good old ink on paper.
