iPhone 3.0 push notifications delayed? [updated]
One of the most talked about and anticipated features of the new iPhone OS 3.0 is the push notification system. By using push notifications, app developers will be able to notify iPhone users when they have received new information relating to one of their registered apps that use this new technology. This concept was first announced last summer, and finally released with the new iPhone OS? Yes, sort of.
iPhone Developer Intervention Week 12: Threading
After the WWDC announcements last week, there is a lot to be excited about when it comes to developing for the iPhone. One thing that can potentially help applications run smoother and faster (especially when it comes to networking on the iPhone) is threading. Threading allows developers to run two or more tasks in concurrency. Apple makes this pretty easy in Objective-C and XCode.
iPhone Tethering coming for a price, not free like MMS
It was quite a while ago that AT&T announced it would at one time support tethering on Apple’s iPhone. The iPhone 3.0 software is upon us, and it officially supports a tethering application from Apple, but users won’t be able to take advantage of it until later this summer when AT&T actually tells us the details (release date, prices). That said, there are some rumors floating around of what AT&T may announce.
iPhone 3.0 First Look: Cut, Copy, and Paste
As any respectable Apple or iPhone fanboy would know by now, the 3.0 version of the iPhone OS Software has been officially released by Apple. One of the most prominent new features in this software version is cut, copy, and paste, a feature that has been long awaited for by many iPhone users. I’ll be the first to admit that it took Apple way too long to get this into such a powerful device, but I believe the extra time they took to create it payed off. It works really well, for the most part.
iPhone 3.0 update issues
iPhone OS 3.0 has only been out for a couple of hours, and already we’re seeing some weird behavior. Case in point? This image, in which one of our staff members found an odd GUI issue in his Favorites screen. As far as update problems go, this, of course, is nothing; as long as everything is functioning properly and no data is lost, you have to consider it a successful upgrade. But, as with most software updates, anomalies are bound to arise.
iPhone OS 3.0 now available
Apple has officially released iPhone OS 3.0. The software upgrade is available through iTunes for free for iPhone owners, and $9.95 for owners of the iPod touch. This update includes some of the features that many felt should have been part of the initial iPhone rollout, including cut, copy & paste, a landscape keyboard, and MMS functionality, but brings plenty of new and enhanced features, as well.
iPhone Developer Intervention Week 11: WWDC Announcements
Last week, we talked about frameworks in relation to developing for the iPhone. With iPhone OS 3.0, Apple has updated and added many frameworks, as well as other interesting tidbits for iPhone developers. For instance, push notifications will now be included into the operating systems and will allow developers to send updates to users without their app being in the foreground. From a developer standpoint, this creates a lot more functionality for an app. Furthermore…
WWDC Keynote live blog
A fantastic week of E3 announcements and demonstrations is past us, and it’s now time turn our attention towards Apple’s WWDC. The event kicks off Monday, June 8th at 10:00 PDT (1:00 p.m. EDT) from the Moscone Center in San Francisco, but we couldn’t wait to get our live blog up. Why? Because we’ve got some great products to give away, and we want to let you know how to win them.
WWDC: Evolution of a revolution part 1 – iPhone OS 3.0
As I’m sure you’ve heard, Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) kicks off on Monday, and expectations are very high. Swirling around the web are lots of WWDC rumors guessing what Apple will do and anticipating with excitement the possible hardware announcement, but I want to spend a little time discussing what WWDC is really all about: Operating Systems.
Next iPhone named? iPhone Video?
If you’ve saved up both money and vacation time just to be able to purchase the next generation iPhone, then you’ll be excited to hear the name given to the object of your blind affection. According to an anonymous tip to TUAW, Apple’s next generation of iPhone will be named “iPhone Video.” Along with the tip came the screenshot above of what appears to be an AT&T device support page. While it looks real, this is among the easiest of images to fake.
