Apple selling unlocked, contract-free iPhones… in Canada
I imagine that being an American iPhone user is like being a child who’s parents are trapped in a bad marriage. Witness the debacle following the launch of the iPhone 4G, where current AT&T customers were unable to order iPhones due to server issues. Adding insult to injury, across the border Apple is making kissy noises to Canadian customers, who can order unlocked iPhone 3GS and 4G direct from Apple.
Apple releases iPhone 4 video
Couldn’t make it to the WWDC keynote to see all the iPhone 4 goodness? No worries, Apple has already released their marketing video detailing some of the new aspects of the iPhone 4. At about six minutes in length, it covers FaceTime, the new Retina Display, and a bunch of other cool iPhone 4 related design elements. You can watch the video on Apple’s website, which you can bet is using HTML5 over Flash.
WWDC 2010 rumor roundup
We’re less than 24 hours away from Steve Jobs’ keynote at WWDC 2010. Rumors regarding products and features have been circulating for months now, so we thought we’d help you all catch up on what to expect (or at least hope) to see come out of San Francisco tomorrow. As expected, the majority of rumors surround the iPhone HD, but Apple TV has had some fun discussion as well.
iPhone HD parts video leaked, more images
As if there weren’t enough leaked photos of the possible iPhone HD that will be launched at this year’s WWDC, this week has brought us even more. It started with an image of a reflection of the iPhone, then we were given a much more clear image followed by a possible white iPhone. This new image also displays a white iPhone but instead gives us a view of the back. However, there are even more images of iPhone parts past the break.
Rumor: iPhone 4G screen to be 960×640
A report from the Czech site SuperiPhone.cz claims the iPhone 4G will have a 960×640 IPS display that comes in at 320 pixels per inch. In comparison, this is much more than the HTC HD2 (217 ppi), the Verizon/Motorola Droid (265 ppi) and Google’s Nexus One (252 ppi). While the Google Nexus One phone uses a “PenTile” grid which arranges smaller green pixels between red and blue ones, the iPhone will feature a uniform grid of red, green, and blue.
It’s official; Steve Jobs keynote to open WWDC
Monday, June 7th, at the same time as always (10am Pacific time), Apple’s Steve Jobs will kickoff WWDC with a keynote address. With 5,000 developers registered for the event, this speech is bound to bring some pretty exciting news about Apple and potential future products. With the recent Google Android announcements at their I/O conference, it has got to be something big.
Rumor: Next iPhone to have upgraded 5MP camera sensor with flash
Online sources suggest the next iPhone—which is pretty much guaranteed to be almost identical to the prototype that Gizmodo paid for—will have an upgraded 5MP camera sensor along with a flash. Who’s behind the technology? Rumors suggest Apple has chosen OmniVision (the current iPhone camera sensor supplier) to supply the new 5MP sensor and Philips for their LUXEON LED flash technology.
iPhone 4G launch day to be June 7th?
This year’s World Wide Developer Conference held by Apple is set to kick off June 7th and continue through June 11th. Coincidentally, rumors of a new iPhone as its launch day are also on the horizon. And according to Mashable’s “sources familiar with the situation,” this June 7th is to be the day that Apple not only announces the new hardware (as it did with the 3G and 3GS) but also actually makes it available for sale.
The iPhone 4G story: Mindless mistake or planted PR?
Gizmodo has made quite a commotion on the Internet with their purchase of a stolen/lost iPhone 4G (is that even what we should be calling it?) for a rumored 5K-10K. Whether this was actually stolen and then bought by Gizmodo or simply lost and then returned to Gizmodo for a price is up for debate, but there are plenty of other layers to this story that can be debated, as well.
4th gen iPhone to be taller and include front facing camera?
iResQ has posted some pictures of what they believe to be the glass for the 4th generation iPhone. There are two notable differences from the current iPhone glass. First, it’s taller (1/4 inch) and it has an extra hole. Gee whiz, I wonder what we think that’s for; this extra hole in the glass certainly could be for an extra, front facing camera for video chatting. I won’t deny it; I want one, that’s for sure. But at the same time, I find it too good to be true. Parts like this aren’t that difficult to fabricate, so I’m not totally sold.
