T-Mobile to expand support for unlocked iPhones on its network
Even though T-Mobile does not officially carry the iPhone, the carrier has more than a million owners of the (unlocked) iDevice on its network, which would definitely justify expanding its support for it. A leaked employee memo from the carrier, entitled “iPhone Scope of Support” (pictured above), details that they plan to implement this support expansion on January 30th.
Jobs wanted Wi-Fi spectrum for Apple’s first iPhone
Steve Jobs revolutionized the cellphone industry with the release of the iPhone in 2007. But according to comments made by John Stanton, Jobs originally wanted to change the entire idea of the how world interacts with mobile carriers. At the Law Seminars International event in Seattle this week, operator chief turned venture capitalist John Stanton stated that Apple was exploring alternatives for creating a network by only using Wi-Fi-based spectrum as a way to bypass carriers with their mobile plans. That idea was discussed when Stanton worked with Steve Jobs from 2005 to 2007. At that time, Mr Stanton was heading VoiceStream Wireless, now known as T-Mobile.
Verizon throttling customers who use more than 2 GB/month
Some bad news for customers on Verizon’s unlimited data plan; like its competitor AT&T, Verizon revealed it has started throttling customers that it believes to be using an excessive amount of data. The carrier found that the top 5% of its data users were using 2 GB+ each month, and therefore those are the customers that this new policy will affect.
What to make of the Sprint iPhone rumor
While being cautious about rumors, there is some level of truthfulness to this WSJ claim. The Wall Street Journal broke the news last year about the Verizon iPhone before the company’s own announcement, so they are worthy of our trust. If the rumor ends up being true, Sprint will be nation’s third-largest carrier to carry the iPhone this year after Verizon, and Apple itself would earn even more from the sales of the iPhone by selling through more U.S. carriers.
T-Mobile now offering Micro SIM cards
After T-Mobile revealed last month that they had over a million iPhones on their network, despite the fact that users had to modify their SIM cards in order to be able to use their iPhone with the carrier, they have now officially released their Micro SIM cards, making the iPhone along with other GSM smartphones officially compatible with the T-Mobile’s network.
T-Mobile is now carrying over a million unlocked iPhones
Apple doesn’t offer the iPhone on T-Mobile, but that hasn’t stopped over a million customers of the carrier from using the iDevice on their network. Seth Weintraub of 9to5 Mac had the opportunity to speak with T-Mobile spokespeople at a meeting ahead of the NYC Pepcom event, who informed him of the huge number of iPhone owners on T-Mobile’s network, most of who own previous generations of the iDevice.
Survey: Verizon iPhone will have major impact on U.S. carriers
A new ChangeWave survey of 4,050 consumers, completed just days before the announcement, focused on the impact of a Verizon iPhone on the major U.S. Wireless Service Providers. ChangeWave’s Paul Carton says first the researchers asked survey respondents how likely they were to change their wireless service provider in the next 90 days. A total of 10% said they plan on switching providers – two points higher than a previous ChangeWave survey in September and the highest churn level of the past 18 months.
Rumor: iPhone getting second US carrier…T-Mobile?
According a new rumor circulating the web, talks between Apple and T-Mobile are at an “advanced stage,” and it is 80 percent likely that the best-selling smartphone will be brought to T-Mobile in this very fiscal quarter. This information comes from a high ranking source within T-Mobile, who wished not to be quoted directly and to remain anonymous. T-Mobile is owned by Deutsche Telekom—the carrier of the iPhone in Germany—which has reportedly been a factor in these talks.
AT&T to raise early termination fees?
Want to cancel your AT&T iPhone plan? Are you waiting to see if we get a Verizon iPhone this June? If so, that may not be a good idea for you or your wallet. It’s being reported that AT&T will soon raise their early termination fee from $175 to $325. If that sounds like a ripoff, keep in mind that Verizon, too, upped the price for their early terminations a while back to $350.
iPhone HD coming to AT&T on June 21st?
Remember last year when Apple announced the iPhone 3GS? AT&T didn’t intend to allow iPhone 3G owners to upgrade to the iPhone 3GS at the advertised (reduced) price. After much unhappiness, they relented and allowed iPhone 3G early adopters to get the upgrade price they wanted. Well, fast forward to now. Looks like AT&T might be preparing to avoid that happening again by just moving back the upgrade eligibilities for current iPhone 3GS owners.
