whited00r 5.1 now available for legacy iDevices
whited00r—which provides users of discontinued iDevices such as the iPhone 2G/3G and iPod touch 1G/2G features found within versions of iOS that these iDevices are unable to support—has been updated to version 5.1. The update mainly adds features from within iOS 5 to these iDevices, bringing them up to date with newer iDevice models…with a few exceptions, of course.
iOS hacker comex lands an internship with Apple
Well-known 19-year-old iOS hacker Nicholas Allegra—known by his alias “comex” and most notable for his creation of the JailbreakMe website/iOS jailbreaking tool—has been hired as an intern for Apple, an undoubtedly smart move by the company and quite bad news for the jailbreak community. comex announced the internship via his Twitter account, which he says will begin in approximately two weeks from now.
Project iX to bring GNU/Linux to iDevices
Another exciting project for the jailbroken iDevice community, entitled Project iX, is currently in development. The direct sister project of the iDroid Project—which has ported the Android operating system over to iDevices up to the iPhone 3G and is currently expanding to newer iDevice models—is aiming to port an X11-based GNU/Linux distribution over to iDevices, adding even more possibilities when it comes to running alternative operating systems.
iPhone Dev Team releases PwnageTool 4.3.2
The iPhone Dev Team, as promised, has updated its PwnageTool app to version 4.3.2, which now includes the 4.3.2 untethered jailbreak that had been introduced to its other jailbreaking tool, redsn0w, a few days ago. The jailbreak is compatible with all iDevices that support iOS 4.3.2 except for the iPad 2, and the purpose of this PwnageTool release is mostly for unlockers who wish to update and jailbreak while preserving their baseband version in order to preserve their carrier unlock.

Overclocking. It’s been happening on computers worldwide for years. These days, Many CPUs run slower than their potential for a couple of reasons—such as heat concerns and power saving. By overclocking them, the performance they put out can be increased, along with some risk. As you’d expect, the same is true for the Apple iDevices. Well, now that overclocking potential has been unlocked if you’re using a jailbroken iDevice.
World’s first iPhone worm Rick rolls your phone
The first worm to come to the iPhone doesn’t erase all of your data, steal your information, or even turn your phone into a brick. This worm simply changes your lock screen wallpaper to famous British pop star Rick Astley with a message that reads, “Ikee is never going to give you up.” While it is scary in and of itself that this hacker is able to make such a change to your phone’s data, you’ll be delighted to hear this fear should only be for people with jailbroken iPhones.
Apple releases iPhone update 3.0.1, fixes SMS hack
Apple has pushed out the iPhone 3.0.1 update, defeating the SMS security hole that had been in the news of late. Security expert Charlie Miller found the hole and informed Apple of it a month ago, but until today, they had done nothing to combat it. He revealed the details of his hack at Black Hat, where hackers convene to make the public aware of security breaches that can be made relatively easily.
Palm Pre syncing and AT&T tethering workaround both broken with Apple updates
As most of you probably know, Apple recently released iPhone 3.1 beta 2 to developers to play with. Along with some bugs fixes and improvements in code, this update features the breaking of the IPCC hack we saw that enabled tethering for AT&T early on the iPhone. Since AT&T won’t be supporting iPhone tethering until later in the year for an undetermined price, this is sort of a bummer for the people who found this workaround useful.
iPhone external keyboard without hacking, but on iPhone 2.0 SDK
Two PerceptDev engineers by the names of Zack Gainsforth and George Dean have been able to get an infrared keyboard working with their iPhone. At first, you may be thinking that they simply are using the 3.0 SDK with allows developers to communicate with devices plugged in to the 30 pin connector, but they aren’t. This hack simply uses less that $20 worth of hardware and an audio port modem. Check out the video after the break.
First look: Five-Column Springboard
For all of those with jailbroken iPhones/iPod touches, there’s a cool new hack to look forward to in Cydia in the near future. Known as FCSB (Five-Column Springboard), it does exactly what the name implies; it allows you to have five columns of apps on your springboard! This new hack is not yet available for public release and is still in development, but it’s definitely something to look forward to, especially for people who need more springboard space for apps.
