iOSOpenDev to allow the development of unofficial third-party apps in Xcode

A new project entitled iOSOpenDev will allow something that many iOS developers should be excited about: the ability to create unofficial third-party apps, tweaks, themes, etc. right from within Xcode. The project, created by developer Spencer James, is nearing completion and public release, and is almost certain to gain a lot of hype among App Store developers interested in creating something for the jailbreak community.

Zephyr touch multitasking iOS tweak updated to version 1.1

If you’ve jailbroken your iDevice(s), you may be aware of a really cool tweak in the Cydia Store that provides the ability to multitask through touch gestures alone. This tweak, called Zephyr, has just been updated to version 1.1, bringing with it the ability to also navigate to the home screen without having to use the home button.

Handset jailbreaking DMCA exemption to expire later this year unless renewed

If you care about jailbreaking and its future within the U.S., you should be worried about the fact that the exemption which ruled that jailbreaking a handset was not a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) will expire later this year. Back in 2010, that exemption made it clear that jailbreaking a handset such as an iPhone is completely legal in the United States, even though it was strictly limited to “handsets” and did not cover things such as tablets or video game consoles.

Corona untethered jailbreak updated with iBooks fix

One (now former) problem with the untethered jailbreak (dubbed “Corona”) on iOS 5.0.1 was incompatibility with iBooks due to a sandboxing issue that prevented jailbreakers from using the app. Now, a new update to the Corona untethered jailbreak by comex has fixed this issue at the kernel level, finally giving jailbreakers access to iBooks just as if they hadn’t jailbroken their iDevice in the first place.

iOS 5.1 to patch exploit used in 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak

It has been discovered that the exploit used to allow the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak has been patched as of the third (and current) beta of iOS 5.1, meaning that unless another exploit is used once iOS 5.1 comes around, there will likely be no untethered jailbreak for that version of iOS 5.

An iOS 5 untethered jailbreak may soon be coming to interested users. At the moment, users who wants to jailbreak their iOS device have to use the tethered jailbreak from redsn0w, which will requires connection from phone to computer wherever users restart their devices. But new hope comes from the famous Chronic Dev-Team member, pod2g, who discovered a bug in the latest iOS 5 software that enabled him to find an untethered jailbreak.

Siri now hacked onto the iPhone 3GS

It hasn’t been two weeks since we reported that hackers successfully ported Siri to the iPhone 4, and now the same developers have managed to get Siri fully working on the older generation of the iPhone 3GS. They claim that Siri works as anticipated, including the connection to Apple’s servers. Apple is running its own tests with Siri on the iPhone 4, but a future release has not been confirmed.

BigBoss updates its SemiTether tweak

Just a few days ago, BigBoss had released its SemiTether package on Cydia, which is basically a tweak that allows iDevice owners running iOS 5 who have performed a tethered jailbreak to be able to reboot and use their iDevice (minus any unofficial third-party apps, tweaks, and themes) without having to boot tethered using a Mac or PC. v0.9.1 offers increased stability along with a bunch of fixes and new features.
