Up close and personal with the $853 iPhone 3G from Globe Telecoms

After announcing its price range for the iPhone 3G a couple of weeks ago at around $1000 for the prepaid units, Globe Telecoms decided to bring down the price tag to around $853 (8GB model) a few days before the August 22 launch of the iPhone 3G in the Philippines. Unfortunately, Filipinos will have to pay too much to get themselves an iPhone unit as soon as it comes out. How much? A whooping $1,000 plus for the plan-free 16GB iPhone unit. That amount was computed based on a US dollar-Philippine peso exchange rate of $1=P44.3.

Details after the break.

Apple reverses its stand on the proposed iPhone subsidies

Barely two days to go before launching the new iPhone, Apple reportedly issued a statement reversing its earlier stand of not allowing U.S. and European mobile carriers to bring down the price of the iPhone by subsidizing part of the cost that consumers have to pay for it.
