Leaked AT&T memo discusses record iPhone sales for the 3GS

Until now, there have been guesstimates of how many iPhone 3G Ss were sold on its launch day this year. Apple and AT&T have been keeping quite, and we do know that the devices are being sold out around the globe. However, after seeing a recent memo leaked to MacDailyNews, it appears as if the sales were of great quantities.

The meaning of the $99 iPhone 3G to Pre and RIM

At this year’s WWDC, Apple announced the new iPhone 3GS. While this was a pretty interesting refresh to the iPhone line, I believe that the lowering of the iPhone 3G 8GB to $99 is much bigger news. For a while now, people have been preaching that Apple needs to hit the $149 price point or lower in order to make their way into a more mainstream market. With this announcement, they have.

Rumor: AT&T to sell iPhones without contracts or activation

Earlier this week, rumors surfaced that AT&T would start selling the iPhone 3G without the standard two-year contract. The purchaser would pay more for the iPhone: $599 for the 8GB and $699 for the 16GB, but would not be required to activate the phone at the store.

Up close and personal with the $853 iPhone 3G from Globe Telecoms

After announcing its price range for the iPhone 3G a couple of weeks ago at around $1000 for the prepaid units, Globe Telecoms decided to bring down the price tag to around $853 (8GB model) a few days before the August 22 launch of the iPhone 3G in the Philippines. The iPhone 3G was launched on August 22 amidst Filipino spectators and Apple fans who waited jubilantly till the stroke of midnight before they could finally lay their hands on the iPhone 3G. Reports had it that Globe Telecoms was available to activate 600 iPhone 3G units in a couple of hours.

The following day, after reading various reports, I trooped to the nearest Globe Telecoms distribution center to check out the iPhone 3G. Find out what happened after the break.

SingTel publicizes pricing plans for upcoming iPhone Release

In anticipation of the August 22nd iPhone release, the sole service provider for the iPhone in Singapore, SingTel, has officially announced the five available plans for the device. There are seven plans in all, with prices ranging from $26 to $205 per month. The iFlexi plans—unlike the iOne, iTwo and iThree plans, despite having bundled voice and data plans—are more expensive then their counterparts, and are only available until the 5th of September. For $20, one can add 500MB of local data to one of the non-iFlexi plans, and overages come in at a steep $2 per megabyte. As for the price of the actual iPhone, the 8GB version ranges from $700 to $0, depending on the value of the plan purchased, and the 16GB version ranges from $850 to free. The cheapest plan, the iOne Plus, costs $26 per month, and the actual device will set you back $700 and $850 for 8GB and 16GB, respectively.

iPhone 3G to cost $1000 plus in the Philippines

As soon as it was announced that the iPhone 3G is coming over to some other countries on Aug. 22, a local mobile distributor in the Philippines, Globe Telecom, put up its official product site. It was pretty exciting to learn that we Filipino Apple fans are finally getting the iPhone in a legit way, having been skipped during last year’s first generation iPhone launch. Unfortunately, Filipinos will have to pay too much to get themselves an iPhone unit as soon as it comes out. How much? A whooping $1,000 plus for the plan-free 16GB iPhone unit. That amount was computed based on a US dollar-Philippine peso exchange rate of $1=P44.3.

AT&T will let you use your iPhone with another carrier…for a steep price

Well, at least it seems as though we’re making progress. Yesterday I wrote about growing discontent among consumers with the “deal with the devil” Apple made to lock the iPhone to AT&T for a period of five years. Now, The Washington Post reports that AT&T will begin selling the iPhone to users who would like more »

iPhone 3G won’t come with a dock, let alone fit the old one

Remember last week when we found out that the iPhone 3G won’t fit the dock that came with the original iPhone? Yeah, well that’s beginning to look even worse. According to the Sidney Herald, the iPhone 3G won’t even come with a dock of its own. This means you are going to have to fork more »

PriceGrabber study: 42% are interested in buying an iPhone

Here’s another one of “them surveys” on consumers’ perception of the iPhone. PriceGrabber surveyed around 3,066 consumers online, asking if they are interested in buying an iPhone . The results showed that 42% of those surveyed are keen. The suvey, which was conducted between May 20th and June 5th, also revealed that of the 54% more »

AT&T pays Apple $325 subsidy for each iPhone 3G

If you’re wondering how much AT&T is paying Apple for every iPhone that it will sell in the US, research analyst Yair Reiner’s report might answer that question. According to Reiner, for every iPhone 3G sold in the US, AT&T is actually paying Apple $325 in subsidy.

The amount is higher than the normal subsidy that AT&T pays for other smarthphones it offers to consumers, which is usually only around $200. Likewise, said amount also speaks of how much confidence AT&T has on iPhone’s ability to propel its subscriber base. This will bring an increase in AT&T’s revenue through higher returns on new service and data plan subscriptions that will be brought about by subcribers wanting to have their iPhone 3G units.
