Apple updates all of its iLife OS X apps

Apple has just updated all five of its iLife apps for OS X, mostly with minor bug fixes and changes. Those who have purchased the apps via the Mac App Store can head over there to update, and those who have purchased physical copies can update through Software Update or from Apple’s support web page. Following are the changelogs for GarageBand 6.0.4, iMovie 9.0.4, iPhoto 9.1.5, iWeb 3.0.4, and iDVD 7.1.2 for OS X…

GeoTag your iPhoto Library with iPhoneGeotag

If you have an iPhone, then by now you should know that it tracks you. Apple doesn’t do anything with this data, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t. Thanks to some easy to use programs, you can not only see where you’ve been over the past year on a map, you may even be able to see where you took pictures. Peter Burkimsher has written an AppleScript app simply called iPhoneGeotag. It takes your location file and applies that data to your iPhoto Library where the timestamps match. Brilliant!

How to import photos into iPhoto

Importing photos into iPhoto 11 is one of the easiest things you can do on a Mac, but we’re still often asked how to do it. And that’s fine, because we’re always happy to help. If you’re having trouble getting your digital photos onto your Mac (or are doing so in a roundabout way), you’ve come to the right place. These instructions will allow you to import all of your photos in no time at all.

FrameLoader digital picture frame manager review

Whereas I don’t miss the time when Mac compatibility could only be found in catalogs, it’s become even more annoying when incompatibility rears it’s ugly head. Such was the case a while back when I was searching for digital picture frames for my wife. Enter FrameLoader. This handy bit of software provides a simple, drag and drop interface between your digital picture frame and Macintosh; specifically, iPhoto (albums) and iTunes (playlists).

Upgrading from iPhoto to Aperture

If you, like me, have reached the limits of iPhoto, the recently-introduced Mac App Store provided two fantastic reasons to upgrade to Aperture: 1.) Apple’s pro-level photo manager is now less than half its old price (and less than a quarter of its starting price), and 2.) you no longer need to pay for iPhoto if you use another piece of the iLife suite. Practically a steal at $79 in the App Store, Aperture 3 is packed with useful features, and the general consensus seems to be that it is finally on par with Adobe’s Lightroom offering.

Appletell reviews iScrapbook 3

One of the worst things about scrapbooking is the endless amounts of paper, stickers, glue and other supplies you have to continue to buy, not to mention you can’t really make mistakes without having to “scrap” entire pages. And then there’s the amount of space it takes to store all of the supplies and scrapbooks. Surely, in the 21st century there is a better way. Thankfully, there is. It’s called iScrapbook 3.

Eye-Fi: The next generation, X2

Eye-Fi knows what you want in an SD memory card: Endless Memory. If only your camera wasn’t constrained by gigabytes, you’d never have to worry about your memory card being big enough to hold all of the pictures you want to take during your next vacation. Wouldn’t that be great? Well, you can find out with one of Eye-Fi’s new X2 memory cards.

Appletell reviews Pixelmator for Mac OS X [updated]

If Adobe’s products keep adding features you never use, Pixelmator may just be a (much cheaper) alternative. Serious Photoshop users take note; if you are doing extensive photo retouching or basic layer-based image composition, Pixelmator blazes by Adobe’s products. In the time it takes Photoshop to start up, Pixelmator can veni, vidi, vici before the PS splash screen is gone.

Apple updates iLife/iWork apps

For those of you who missed it (indeed, I did until just now), Apple has released updates to their core iLife/iWork apps. iWeb, iMovie and iPhoto have all been updated, along with iLife Support, as have Keynote, Pages and Numbers. The updates were posted to Apple’s website on March 26th, and should be showing up in your Software Update.

Flash! Ah-ahhhhh! Savior of the Universe, and more recognizable in iPhoto than my kids

When Phil Schiller unveiled the new Faces features in iLife ’09 at the Macworld Expo 2009 keynote, my first thought was of my wife. “It’s going to confuse her with the wrong person,” I thought, “and I’ll have to hear about it for the next three weeks.” Well, that wasn’t the case. iPhoto ’09 seemed to understand the problems it could cause and decided to err on the side of caution when seeking her face in my iPhoto library. But is it easier to identify door knobs than my wife’s face?
