GQ iPad app makes debut with May 2011 issue

GQ has announced they will be debuting their new App Store application with the May 2011 issue. This latest version of the app was developed using Adobe’s platform and will provide “a more interactive and enhanced reader experience [that] more closely resembles the look and feel of the print magazine.” The app itself is free on the iTunes App Store, but digital issues of the magazine will cost you $4.99 each.

Angry Birds tops iTunes 2010 iPhone and iPad Apps

Apple has released its annual iTunes Rewind top lists, naming the top paid apps, top free apps, and top grossing apps for both iPhone and iPad. You won’t really surprised by the games and apps that made it to the top lists as you may have heard about them, played them on your iOS devices, and used them as well for work or leisure purposes. What’s surprising about the list is that Angry Birds managed to get into five of the six categories of the top lists.

“Try Before You Buy” on the App Store isn’t what it should be

One of the biggest complaints about the App Store thus far has been that users have no way of really trying an application before they spend the money on it. Apple has launched a section of their App Store entitled “Try Before You Buy,” but while this may seem like a way to demo applications, it technically isn’t. This part of the App Store simply links to applications that offer a “Lite” (free or ad-supported) version of the full paid version.

Happy Appsgiving Day

Or should that be Appy Birthday? Either way, the App Store turns two today, having gone live on July 10th, 2008. Oh, sure, we could go on and on about the importance of the App Store and how it revolutionized smart phones and made millionaires of college kids and what have you, but wouldn’t you rather use it than read about it? The folks at Appsgiving.com would agree, and they’ve got a friendly suggestion for you…

Between games, love calculators, and cards, these applications should help set you in the right direction.

App Store piracy causing Apple to lose almost a half billion dollars

According to research from 24/7 Wall St., Apple rakes in anywhere between $60 and $110 million a quarter from App Store sales, of which between 13% and 21% of the over three billion downloads are paid apps. That said, Apple is certainly losing out on some money due to the over 100,000 apps available through other stores that commonly pirate legit applications. In fact, almost 40% of the content on these stores is pirated.

App Store downloads top 3 billion, will they slow anytime soon?

Just over three months ago, Apple announced their App Store had reached two billion downloads of various applications created by third party developers. This month, Apple stated the App Store has now topped a staggering three billion downloads. This not only means that a billion applications were downloaded in a span of three months, but also that over three billion apps have been downloaded in just over 18 months since the store’s inception

How to redeem iTunes gift cards

I’m no longer surprised by the questions I’m asked. Or how many times I’m asked. This is the case with iTunes gift cards. They’re becoming more and more common, but the giver doesn’t always understand that the recipient may be new to these devices and is unaware of how they work. Thankfully, it’s actually quite basic once you know where to go.

Apple refreshes looks of the App Store

Apple has been working hard to address some of the complaints about the App Store and its ecosystem, especially for developers. One of their latest updates helps both developers and customer. The new layout places a larger emphasis on the description and icon of the application. It also makes it easier to find the more important parts of the app in the left hand column, such as its rating and what products it is compatible with.

Apple exec Schiller defends App Store approval process

Apple iTunes App Store is by far the most successful and easy to use method for purchasing mobile device apps, and it contains over 100,000 applications. However, developers are growing angry with outrageous wait times for approvals and sometimes just plain stupid reasons for rejection of their software. Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, is still defending the process.
