Appletell staff picks: Romantic movies (that aren’t romances) for Valentine’s Day
If all your significant other wants for a Valentine’s Day movie is romance, you can get that in pretty much any kind of movie. So, when you hear the words “Let’s watch something romantic tonight,” you can steer clear of anything with Renee Zellweger or Reese Witherspoon in it and instead take these suggestions from the hopeless romantics here at Appletell. All the movies recommended are available for rental at purchase from iTunes.
Apple releases iTunes Movie Trailers app
The iTunes Movie Trailers is a pretty good looking app which gives you the newest and most exclusive previews of upcoming movies. The app lets you browse trailers, clips and featurettes for the Hollywood blockbusters and independent cinema releases. Additionally, the app also provides you access to high-quality HD photos, and allows you to explore schedules of movie releases and search for showtimes of movies in theaters near you.
iTunes movie review: Citizen Kane: 70th Anniversary Edition
There are a lot of “classic” films that have flaws to modern eyes: Citizen Kane is not one of them. It’s a tale of a great man who lost everything. After 70 years it’s still an engrossing tale, and the iTunes download is a great way to experience it.
iTunes Movie Review: The Lord of the Rings: Special Extended Edition
Here’s what you need to know: this is the latest version of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It contains almost twelve hours of footage, is the most exhaustive vision of the film, and no, Tom Bombadil isn’t in it. If this isn’t the last version of the films to come out, I’ll be flabbergasted. Because in addition to everything that was in the original theatrical release, there’s tons more.
iTunes Movie Review: Mortal Kombat
For the film version of Mortal Kombat, the producers wisely tuned down the gore of the video game to make sure all the kids who loved it could come to see the movie. But they also had the sense not to tamper with the characters and story too much; a group of martial artists competing in a mystical tournament to the death. All the favorites are here…
iTunes movie review: All-Star Superman
As a child, I suppose Superman was my favorite super hero. And although my interest in super hero movies has largely died out over the past decade (Batman not withstanding, of course), I still enjoy some of the cartoons. Super heroes just make more sense in the bright, basic color palettes of 2D animation. Sam Liu’s All-Star Superman is no exception.
iTunes movie review: I Am Legend
I Am Legend is your usual sci-fi disaster movie with New York as the main location. But unlike most sci-fi flicks these days, I Am Legend does not employ too much CGI and other computer-related technologies. Will Smith’s presence is more than enough to compensate for the lack of the usual sci-fi pyrotechnics.
Apple TV 2nd gen first impressions
I got an early Christmas present by way of a new Apple TV 2nd gen, which was delivered to me by a friend who came from the U.S. a few days ago. The 2nd gen Apple TV currently retails for $99 on the Apple Online Store. For that amount, you get a nifty streaming device that you can use together with various Apple products. So, I’ll go straight to the point and give you my first impressions about the Apple TV.
iTunes movie review: The Goonies
The Goonies is my Karate Kid. It’s my Sixteen Candles. It’s one of perhaps half a dozen movies for which I’ll put aside my goings on when I find it showing on a Saturday afternoon. Now, it’s on iTunes, and it’s certainly a movie worth owning. It holds up surprisingly well for a movie released in the mid-’80s (only the special effects don’t), and the extra features include Susanna Hoffs and Andre the Giant. There’s your $9.99 right there.
iTunes movies for Halloween: Aliens
Or as I like to call it “Horror Movies for the Easily Frightened.” I’ve never been a big fan of horror movies, because I am a big chicken. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to appreciate some really good scary movies—movies that terrorize and are well made. So, for my first Halloween movie suggestion, here’s the first scary movie I was able to sit through: Aliens.
