Appletell staff picks: Romantic movies (that aren’t romances) for Valentine’s Day

Corpse Bride

If all your significant other wants for a Valentine’s Day movie is romance, you can get that in pretty much any kind of movie. So, when you hear the words “Let’s watch something romantic tonight,” you can steer clear of anything with Renee Zellweger or Reese Witherspoon in it and instead take these suggestions from the hopeless romantics here at Appletell. All the movies recommended are available for rental at purchase from iTunes.

Does Apple fear putting Hulu Plus on Apple TV?

9to5Mac is reporting that Apple made a decision not to update it’s Apple TV software with the Hulu Plus app for a “political not a technical reason.” Sources claim the Hulu Plus application has been finished and is ready to be installed on Apple TV, but development has been placed on hold. It’s speculated that the hold-up is because Apple wants to protect its own iTunes revenue stream.

Apple gets rid of iTunes TV show rentals

The iTunes Store and Apple TV catalog are now completely rid of 99-cent TV show rentals, with all mention of them also removed from Apple’s website. The idea of being able to rent movies and TV shows rather than having to purchase them isn’t a bad one, but at $0.99 for a TV show rental, the price wasn’t very justifiable. Still, Apple believes its customers would rather own the TV shows they purchase, so the rentals likely won’t be coming back any time soon.

iTunes movie review: All-Star Superman

As a child, I suppose Superman was my favorite super hero. And although my interest in super hero movies has largely died out over the past decade (Batman not withstanding, of course), I still enjoy some of the cartoons. Super heroes just make more sense in the bright, basic color palettes of 2D animation. Sam Liu’s All-Star Superman is no exception.

iTunes movie review: I Am Legend

I Am Legend is your usual sci-fi disaster movie with New York as the main location. But unlike most sci-fi flicks these days, I Am Legend does not employ too much CGI and other computer-related technologies. Will Smith’s presence is more than enough to compensate for the lack of the usual sci-fi pyrotechnics.

iTunes movie review: The Goonies

The Goonies is my Karate Kid. It’s my Sixteen Candles. It’s one of perhaps half a dozen movies for which I’ll put aside my goings on when I find it showing on a Saturday afternoon. Now, it’s on iTunes, and it’s certainly a movie worth owning. It holds up surprisingly well for a movie released in the mid-’80s (only the special effects don’t), and the extra features include Susanna Hoffs and Andre the Giant. There’s your $9.99 right there.

The Maltese Falcon iTunes download contest

Remember when you were growing up and your parents would watch these old black and white movies that would make them wistfully recall the “golden age of hollywood?” The movies just looked boring to you, right? Well, not all of them were, and sometimes your parents were right, especially when they were watching Humphrey Bogart. Want proof? Then enter to win our free iTunes download of The Maltese Falcon.

iTunes movie review: 300

Ah, 300. The testosterone-soaked film famous for depicting one of the legendary events of western civilization, mostly through slow-motion yelling. Three hundred Spartan warriors face off against an immense invasion by holing up in a bottleneck. It works pretty well, until it doesn’t. Endlessly parodied and debated, 300 does not know the meaning of the word “subtle.” It’s about men, manly men fighting a manly battle against incredible odds.

Rumor: 99 cent TV show rentals to come to iTunes?

According to reports, there may be even more goodies surrounding the ever-so-hot rumor of the new Apple TV, the iTV. While the latest rumor doesn’t involve any news regarding hardware or design of the new product, it does contain something that could actually make a huge splash in terms of how we consume media. The rumor: Apple is in talks with several media outlets about allowing 99 cent commercial free rentals of TV shows within 24 hours of airing on TV. This—on top of a potential $99 iTV—will certainly spell out a-f-f-o-r-d-a-b-l-e.

iTunes Store starts offering discount movies

It appears as if Apple wants to help your wallet out during this not so good economy. With their new iTunes sections called “This Week’s Great Movies Under $5″ and “This Week’s Great Albums Under $5,” iTunes Store users will now be able to browse through a nice category of limited time, cheaper digital downloads. more »
