Apple launches iCloud beta for developers in beta, announces pricing
Ahead of the public launch this September, Apple has just launched the iCloud.com web interface for developers. Although the site is still in beta, you can already preview the different web apps, including Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Find My Phone and iWork. The web works similarly to iOS and Lion apps. What’s interesting to note here is the iWork web app which will let you see your iWork (Pages, Keynote and Numbers) documents that you’ve synched from your iDevices.
How to password protect iWork and Word documents on your Mac
Keeping your system safe and sound is important if you work with any sensitive data or if you just have to share your system with your family (or nosy roommates) and you want to maintain your own personal privacy. Since you cannot always lock out the whole system, locking single document is a solid option, as it allows you to keep just some data secured.
Rumor: iWork Pages coming to iPhone
As with most rumors, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard that iWork for iPhone may be on the way. However, this time the rumor is coming with a full picture walkthrough of what one of the iWork apps, Pages, may look like on the iPhone. If you ask me, this gives the rumor a little bit more credibility. That, the fact that iWork for iPad is available, and the release of the iPhone 4 are all somewhat pointing to the idea that this rumor may actually become fact soon.
How to sync iWork files between your Mac and your iPad
Taking your spreadsheets on the go does not mean you need an internet connection. Provided you have iTunes 9.1.1 or later (and an iPad, of course), you can simply share your iWork files between your Mac and iPad by using iTunes. You will lose any special fonts and some formatting on the iPad version, but it’s otherwise a fairly quick and painless process. Just follow these steps…
Apple announces iWork for iPad
It was a high possibility that Apple would release a new version of iWork for 2010, but no one really saw iWork coming to the brand new Apple iPad. Well, that’s exactly what Steve Jobs just introduced live on stage. Pages, Numbers and Keynote will all be available on the iPad, each with its own new beautiful interface.
Apples and Tablets and Clouds
Oh my. The Mac community is abuzz with yet another rumor of a forthcoming Apple Tablet—which is odd. Steve Jobs has publicly spoken about netbooks, declaring, “We don’t know how to build a sub-$500 computer that is not a piece of junk and our DNA will not allow us to ship that.” The iPhone and iPod Touch are already good handheld computers…it is tough to see where a larger tablet-format screen would add any value.
Apple updates iLife/iWork apps
For those of you who missed it (indeed, I did until just now), Apple has released updates to their core iLife/iWork apps. iWeb, iMovie and iPhoto have all been updated, along with iLife Support, as have Keynote, Pages and Numbers. The updates were posted to Apple’s website on March 26th, and should be showing up in your Software Update.
Keynote, Pages, Numbers updated
Apple released updates to Keynote, Pages, and Numbers last night. The Keynote update “addresses compatibility issues with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2008 as well as general compatibility issue,” while the Pages and Numbers update affect only “general compatibility.” Clearly, this means that Apple will be selling iPhone 3Gs for $99.
Microsoft’s Mac business unit starts expansion
In what general manager of the Mac business unit Craig Eisler says is the “…biggest hiring initiative since the inception of MacBU eleven years ago,” Microsoft’s Mac BU is expanding. In a blog post on the “Mac Mojo” blog, Eisler wrote that the Mac BU is “…hard at work planning for products beyond Office 2008, and we are growing our team to help turn our vision into reality.” Whether he means yet-unannounced products or making Messenger for Mac just a little less of a joke remains to be seen, but they’ve got something up their sleeves.
Let’s figure out what after the break.
