iCloud goes live early for everyone to see [updated]
It’s the 12th of October. Today is definitely iOS 5 day. After iTunes 10.5 was released yesterday, another part of iOS 5 has just gone live: iCloud. Yes, the iCloud appears to be working right now. You can log in to the site using your Apple account and use Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Find My Phone and iWork. Your iPhone or iPad will need to be running iOS 5, but it could be worthwhile to prepare yourself and have a feel of how the iCloud works.
Apple to discontinue MobileMe with iCloud as its replacement
As Apple has introduced its iCloud service at the WWDC keynote yesterday, you may be wondering what will become of its predecessor, MobileMe. Unfortunately, Apple has decided to discontinue the $99/year service with iCloud as its replacement, according to a new support document from the company which outlines the details of how the transition over the newer service will take place.
Apple pulls MobileMe from online store
If you’ve been browsing through Apple’s online store lately, you might have noticed that MobileMe has completely gone missing. Apple’s alleged explanation for the disappearance is that they are discontinuing the $99 boxed versions of the service, which leaves us to speculate just what they’re planning to do with it. It’s unlikely Apple is planning to eliminate MobileMe from its offerings already, as the service is still quite new.

Apple releases “Find my iPhone” App
Everyone wants an iPhone and an iPad. But not everyone wants to pay for them. Apple, of course, built the ability to track your iPhone/iPad into its Mobile me service, allowing you to locate it via GPS, send text messages in the hopes that some honest soul would return it, and lock the device or even wipe all the information from it if it wasn’t returned. Apple has now released Find My iPhone for its iDevice series, which allows you to access the security functions from any other compatible device (iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad).
Macworld 2010: John Gruber on Apple’s Top 10 Issues
John Gruber, author of Daring Fireball outlined what he felt were the top ten issues facing Apple (but not necessarily with solutions) at his Macworld 2010 presentation. In no particular order (except for the first, biggest, one) they included Steve Jobs, the future of computers, figuring out why Mobile Me exists, and the difference between safety and security.
Find My iPhone in action
iPhone owners (who also use MobileMe) were excited to hear that the two products could combine to help you find, recover, or remotely erase your iPhone if it was lost or stolen. Now there’s one man’s story of actually using it to recover his precious iPhone. While attending a Lego convention, Kevin Miller left his iPhone on the table of the bar where he had dinner. This blatant act of abandonment, however, turned into a day of adventure when he used his MobileMe account to track down the man who stole his iPhone.
iPhone 3.0 First Look: Find My iPhone
When Apple previewed the iPhone 3.0 update at WWDC last week, one of the previously unannounced features was the new “Find My iPhone” service for Mobile Me users. Being a Mobile Me subscriber, I thought I would try it out and let you know how it worked. After spending some time trying out this feature, I am impressed by the simplicity and elegance of it. As a Mobile Me user, I am glad Apple has continued to increase the spectrum of my Mobile Me subscription, making it even more valuable.
WWDC: Mobile Me updated
Apple revealed several new features of iPhone OS 3.0 at WWDC today. One of these features is “Find My iPhone,” and it is only available to Mobile Me subscribers. However, the Mobile Me page includes a few other “Coming Soon” features that didn’t make it into the Keynote.
Is MobileMe worth it?
Just a few days ago, my MobileMe trial ran out and I was forced to hand over my card details once again to Apple. I haven’t thought about the service much throughout the time I’ve been using it, it’s just been part of my computing needs. But now with competitors such as Google offering a very similar service for free, you have to ask yourself whether MobileMe is worth it.
