MacRumors has found evidence in the newest firmware release from Apple for a next generation iPhone model. The evidence can be found in the file named USBDeviceConfiguration.plist in an unencrypted firmware. Basically, it just references a model that has never been referenced before, model 2,1. Model numbers do not change for storage increases, as all first generation iPhones carried the same model designation, 1,1, as do all 3G iPhones, 1,2.

Numerous websites are reporting independently on iPhone firmware 3.0. The rumor claims that it will support a quad core processor, and there’s evidence to help support that claim.
