Apple releases Magic Mouse, world’s first multi-touch mouse

Without much fanfare, Apple this morning announced the Magic Mouse, “the world’s first multi-touch mouse.” Taking cues from the iPhone and MacBook track pad, the Magic Mouse takes advantage of multi-touch technology to deliver much more control than was possible with buttons and a scroll wheel. Instead the seamless surface reads gestures of one and two fingers to provide functionality. Hold down the control key on your keyboard, and you’ll enable even more multi-touch commands.

An Apple special event in September? Again? Maybe…

9to5Mac is reporting that analysts at Piper Jaffray are predicting Apple will hold a special event this September to make some new announcements. These new announcements, according to the analysts, include new iPods and Macs.

This rumor does not site any insider sources, but seems to be purely speculation. Gene Munster, one of the analysts, points out that Apple has held a special event every September for the last three years, so it’s not that hard to believe that they would do it again. What about Apple Expo 08?

A refresh for the Apple Cinema displays may be in the works

MacRumors is reporting a rumor of new Apple Cinema displays to be announced at MWSF 2009. The only feature rumored to be added is LED backlighting.

Apple’s 20″, 23″, and 30″ Cinema displays have remained expensive and relatively unchanged since launched in 2004.

10.6 and then no more? Hope so.

There’s only so much Apple can do with a product. Yes, even Apple has limits. Mac OS X is getting long in the tooth. Just look to the Leopard features list for evidence. While everything is nicely improved in Leopard, there’s no big innovation, no game-changing features. Mac OS X 10.6 will be the last more »

Lux: multi-touch for OS X

We all suspected that Mac OS X would one day support a multi-touch interface, similar to the iPhone’s – but not from a third party company. Lux is currently an experimental framework that brings multi-touch in full screen to Mac OS X. Christian Moore has managed to get this entire multi-touch system running on Apple’s low-end MacBook laptop. He claims that his framework can in fact run on any platform. The gesture recognition and animation of the interface are comparable to that of Jeff Han or the Microsoft Surface. Lux is scheduled to go public in June. See the video after the jump.

What will the next iPods be like?

There has been tons of rumors lately about what the new iPhone is going to look like and and what features it will have. Sure, the iPhone is bound to be updated (or announced to be updated) in June at WWDC, but what about that little thing we call the iPod? Can’t we give them more »

Handwriting recognition software in iPhone 2.0 beta

If you remember a while back, I wrote about a third party app that allows for handwriting recognition on the iPhone called HWPen. Now, according to recent reports, build number 5A258f of the iPhone 2.0 beta software supports a handwriting recognition interface that currently allows only Chinese character input. Apple updates MacBook Pros with Penryn; multi-touch

Finally, after weeks of intense rumoring, the new updated MacBook Pros are here. Featuring new Penryn chips with bumped clock speeds, and the latest Nvidia Graphics with up to 512MB of VRAM, the new MacBook Pros are beasts. They continue to widen the gap between the consumer MacBooks and the MacBook Pros with new multi-touch capability that was first seen in the MacBook Air. The new MBPs also come with larger and faster hard drives with 200GB and 250GB of storage, and a new option for a 200GB 7200rpm HD for pro users.

Apple working on Mac Touch; hiring an army of engineers

Another rumor airing on the side of speculation come from Apple Jobs today. An Apple Job listing reveals that Apple is working on multi-touch user interfaces for Macs. That’s right, an iPhone-like UI on a full-fledged Macintosh. The ad shows they are specifically looking for someone who is a reliability engineer, and has experience supporting more »

Apple looks to secure “Multi-Touch” Trademark

It seems like Apple’s trying to protect the “Multi-Touch” trademark worldwide; according to AppleInsider, the electronics giant discreetly applied for the trademark at an intellectual property office in the Far East. Should the application be approved, this will give Apple control over where and when the trademark could be used by other parties. The restriction more »
