Rumor: Nvidia’s graphics in 2012 MacBook Pro

The advantage of AMD’s Llano is that while its processor ends up being a little less powerful, it makes up for it by having much stronger graphics, which is more important when playing games or working with video. While Intel has powerful processors, it has weak integrated graphics, and Apple was likely trying to improve on this by switching to AMD. However, this deal fell through when AMD wasn’t able to guarantee enough supply of their Llano processors to Apple.

Microsoft creating an iPhone competitor?

A little late to the party, it appears as if Microsoft has finally decided that they, too, want to make their own phone to market and sell. If this rumor is, in fact, true, the device will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra chipset and obviously run some flavor of Windows Mobile. Although that is more »

New MacBooks are more powerful than Apple admits

Yesterday, Nvidia paid Gizmodo a visit to spill some more details about the recently released GeForce GPUs that are inside of Apple’s newest MacBooks. They specifically cleared up some of the information floating around about hardware limitations. It seems Apple is being a little conservative about what and how much the new MacBooks can actually handle.

When you first read of the MacBook Pro’s dual GPUs, you likely assumed they could be used simultaneously. This, currently, is not the case. You have to choose between the 9400M and the 9600M GT, which are separated by a user log out. According to Nvidia, this is not a limitation of their chips. The hardware is fully capable of running both GPUs at the same time and spitting out graphics like water from a fire hydrant.

And that’s not all…

New MacBooks to have Nvidia Nside

If TUAW’s sources are to be believed then the upcoming MacBook’s coming from Apple may just have Nvidia graphic chips in them.

Ongoing problems with MacBook Pro ripples

An Appletell reader has drawn our attention to a graphics problem that seems to have been plaguing some MacBook and MacBook Pro owners at least since the beginning of the year. According to the conversation in this thread (and a few others, apparently), some MacBooks are having trouble drawing high-contrast, text-heavy pages, resulting in the ripple effect you see above.

The thread is filled with possible solutions (from switching monitor resolutions to replacing the graphics card), none of which seem to work for everyone. Of course, it being an Apple thread, there’s also a hefty helping of that sweet, sweet hyperbole.

Check it out, along with more details analysis, after the break.

Apple updates MacBook Pros with Penryn; multi-touch

Finally, after weeks of intense rumoring, the new updated MacBook Pros are here. Featuring new Penryn chips with bumped clock speeds, and the latest Nvidia Graphics with up to 512MB of VRAM, the new MacBook Pros are beasts. They continue to widen the gap between the consumer MacBooks and the MacBook Pros with new multi-touch capability that was first seen in the MacBook Air. The new MBPs also come with larger and faster hard drives with 200GB and 250GB of storage, and a new option for a 200GB 7200rpm HD for pro users.

NVIDIA working on first GPGPUs for Macs

One of the biggest complaints I have about Apple’s hardware is the lack of decent graphics cards in their computers. It took until this month for Apple to put a decent card, the NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT, into the Mac Pro. As for the MacBooks, they don’t even have dedicated graphics cards. I understand that cost is an issue with the MacBook, but there are plenty of cheap dedicated cards. The X3100 is a great improvement from the GMA 950, but still not perfect. Apple are learning from their mistakes and improving all the time. I expect the next MacBook Pro will have one of NVIDIA’s new 8800mGT cards.

NVIDIA 8800GT option for older Mac Pros soon?

A few weeks ago there was a lot of controversy over the addition of the NVIDIA 8800GT video card to the new Mac Pros. This was because owners of older generation Mac Pros were not able to upgrade their video cards to the 8800GT. The Mac Pro is stated by Apple as their most expandable more »

Apple sends mixed messages about 8800GT

If you’re an owner of the earlier generations of Mac Pros, then you may not be so happy to hear this: It appears that the new NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT is only available to the new towers released this week. This is an unacceptable situation from Apple, as they claim the Mac Pro to be a more »
