OnyX review – free system maintenance for Mac OS X

There are a bunch of OS X system maintenance utilities available, but the one I use most often is OnyX. It’s under continuous development and updated frequently, performs well, and notwithstanding that it’s freeware, has a slick, user-friendly, and polished user interface that puts many commercial software apps to shame.

Tips for applying Mac OS X v10.6.6 update

On Thursday, Apple released the Mac OS X v10.6.6 update, largely, it appears, to add support for the new Mac App Store, with the usual slate of security patches and a few minor bugfixes. Letting Software Update handle installing the update is quick and easy, but doing some system maintenance and running a standalone update installer is the best policy for avoiding problems with system updates, and is my preferred option.
