Free Apps Roundup for May 13th, 2011
It’s Friday, Friday, Friday the 13th, which has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Despite some silly superstition implying today isn’t lucky, there are plenty of free apps to suggest otherwise. There’s Super 8 for taking vintage style video, and PBS KIDS to keep your kids entertained with an iPad. I also found some games, utilities and awesome limited time freebies, all after the jump.
Free apps roundup for August 14th, 2009
Another week, another online video service enables support for the iPhone 3GS via an app on the App Store. Don’t worry, there aren’t many more services left. But seriously, there are more apps and utilities beyond the jump that I hope you will find useful. Oddly enough, I didn’t pick out any game demos this week. Enjoy.
UStream to beat Qik in the live streaming to iPhone race?
When it comes to live streaming on the iPhone, your only option up to this point was to jailbreak your iPhone and then use Qik’s live streaming application. However, if Apple (and AT&T’s bandwidth) approves the current version UStream application that the company has submitted to the App Store, theirs may be the first legitimate live streaming application to make it to the iPhone. Going by a demo video that co-founder John Ham took with TechCrunch just this week, it seems as if the application is going to turn out just like it is on other phones.
Qik website comes to iPhone, native app still a work in progress
For those of you eagerly awaiting the native Qik iPhone application to appear in the App Store so you don’t have to jailbreak, you will be very delighted to hear that some progress has been made with the overall process.
This week Qik announced a website specifically optimized for Safari Mobile on the iPhone that will allow iPhone users to watch Qik videos (unfortunately, not live streams yet).
Qik coming to the App Store
You heard right. For those of you who aren’t in the know, Qik is a live video streaming and chatting service. Currently, in order to use Qik on a mobile phone, you need to have a Nokia N95 (or other supported cell phone including, but not limited to, a jailbroken iPhone), but that is about to change.
Kevin Rose, one of my favorite semi-accurate sources of Apple rumors, posted a great short video to YouTube about the app that should be hitting the App Store soon. Some key points to listen for are that he expects the app to be free and that it will stream video (and chat) over WiFi or 3G but I’m guessing not EDGE.
Details and video after the break.
