vokul voice control app for iOS review

vokul siri alternative

Many people are caught up in Siri and how it has revolutionized the future of voice recognition technology without realizing there are many alternatives out there that are just as good, and in some cases even arguably superior. One such opponents I’ve had the pleasure of using on my iPad (an iDevice that does not (currently) support Siri) is vokul by KulTek.

Siri port available for jailbroken iOS devices

Apple Siri

When Apple announced Siri integration, many iOS users were disappointed it was only made available for iPhone 4S. With Siri’s capabilities, it’s not surprising developers and hackers from the iPhone jailbreak community are all experimenting with the technology. A number of attempted ports for the older iOS devices were made, but they required a bit more »

The New York Times is reporting that Apple is secretly working in a prototype device that can be worn as a wrist-strap watch. According to sources within the company, the “… new curved-glass iPod that would wrap around the wrist,” will have the built-in functionality of Siri, allowing users to control the device with their voice. The inspiration seems to come from third-party accessories that make wrist watches of the iPod nano.

Santa gets his own personal Siri assistant

This year, Santa gets a little help for keeping track of time for the Christmas Day gifts deliveries. In the commercial, the digital-assistant Siri demonstrates to Mr. Claus its many uses, such as looking up directions on Google Maps, searching through emails, checking the nice/naughty list and, most importantly, checking the weather conditions.

Dear Apple: Please keep Siri out of my TV

While pervasive voice-activated computing may be part of our future, there will still be room for good old buttons here and there—including remote controls and keyboards. So, while asking your TV to show you the latest episode of Arrested Development is undoubtedly cool, it is simply not likely to happen anytime in the near future.

Rumor: Apple may release more iOS software updates by next week

According to German site Macerkopf, Apple may have plans for further software releases for their iOS devices in the near future. Macerkopf reports that Apple is prepping two separate software updates for the iOS 5, each trying to solve the problems with battery life in iOS devices. Citing an Apple engineer in the iOS division, Macerkopf states Apple has been looking more closely at the battery life problems that have plagued some users and will release an update no later than next week to fix those remaining issues.

Applidium cracks Siri, exposes its dirtiest secrets

When Apple announced the virtual-personal assistant Siri, it was the most impressive feature on the iPhone 4S. But the worst part was that older iOS devices were left out in the cold. In iPhone Dev Team efforts to hack Siri onto the older smartphone, it was discovered that Siri can be ported to an iPhone 4/iPod Touch, and that it will just require a low-level exploit. Now, a developer claims to have just done that.

Apple semi-confirms that Siri won’t come to older iOS devices

This sad news comes despite rumors from last week suggesting Apple was performing secret tests for Siri to run on older iOS hardware such as the iPhone 4. Appleinsider claimed last week to have gotten hold of an email that states Apple has no current plans to add Siri to older devices. This won’t come as a huge surprise to many iOS users, given the fact that sometimes Apple like to exclude features from older generations.

Siri now hacked onto the iPhone 3GS

It hasn’t been two weeks since we reported that hackers successfully ported Siri to the iPhone 4, and now the same developers have managed to get Siri fully working on the older generation of the iPhone 3GS. They claim that Siri works as anticipated, including the connection to Apple’s servers. Apple is running its own tests with Siri on the iPhone 4, but a future release has not been confirmed.

Apple performing Siri tests on older iOS devices

Apple’s Siri voice activated personal assistant is currently exclusive to the iPhone 4S. Many owners of older iDevices devices were angered by this, but it should only be a matter of time before all iPhone 4 owners get a taste of Siri as well. According to rumors from Jailbreaknation, Apple is currently doing tests on Siri to run on older devices such as the iPhone 4.
