Walt Mossberg reviews iPhone 4
Well, of course he did! It’s an Apple product, so who else would have a full review before the product’s available? Gizmodo? Ha! David Pogue? Well…perhaps. But this time, it’s Mossberg, and he’s mostly quite impressed. Walt breaks the review down into six categories: Design, Screen / Voice / Battery / Camera, FaceTime, Multitasking, Folders, and The Big Downside. I’ll let you just go ahead and guess what last one is. [Hint: It has nothing to do with Apple or the iPhone hardware itself.]
Steve Jobs’ full D8 Conference interview
Last week, Steve Jobs took part in a 90 minute interview with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher. Throughout the interview, he talked about the origin of the iPhone, AT&T’s network, and plenty of other fascinating topics. Short clips of these videos have been available on the internet for quite some time now, but you can now view the full, uncut interview.
iPad reviews and videos hit the web
As the launch of the iPad gets closer and closer, people lucky enough to already have gotten their hands on one are posting reviews and videos online. In terms of text reviews, many of your favorite Apple reviewers have weighed in with their thoughts. The general consensus so far appears to be that the device is great for those looking to fill this kind of gap in their tech life. We’ve rounded up some reviews from the bigger names in the Apple web past the jump.
Walt Mossberg reviews the iPad
Why is it that in the three days leading up to all major Apple product releases I wish the Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg was my dad? Or at least my neighbor? His latest video over at All Things Digital will answer that question. He’s holding the iPad, you see. He’s used it. He’s played with it. And now, he wants to share his experiences with you. Check it out, and see how important he feels the iPad will be.
Walt Mossberg on MacBook Pro’s sealed in batteries
Walt Mossberg has his official review of the new MacBook Pro batteries written and published, and his results and insight are very interesting. He makes some very good points regarding how well the built-in batteries in these machines will work for various users. He also describes the growing trend of laptop manufacturers to have built-in batteries, as research has shown that less than 5% of laptop owners purchase an extra battery anyway.
Walt Mossberg speaks out on the new iPhone
Walt Mossberg, everyone’s favorite technology columnist, has written a review of the Palm Pre in which he spends a large portion of his time comparing it to the iPhone. Towards the end of the article he spends a little time speculating about what he expects to come from Apple in the iPhone space. It’s interesting speculation coming from Walt, as he tends to be a man “in the know” and often manages to get his hands on pre-release hardware.
Walt Mossberg comments on new Blackberry App Store
When it comes time for those of us without a Blackberry to learn if Blackberry App World poses a threat to the iTunes App Store, to whom do we turn? Walt Mossberg, of course. This isn’t a full review from Walt, but he felt he spent enough time shopping with the device to comment on it, and basically believes that, “RIM’s store is clumsier to use than Apple’s, but it works.”
It’s official: MobileMe is a flop
David Pogue of The New York Times calls it “Apple’s MobileMess“. Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal says it is “far too flawed to be reliable.” When Apple is hearing these sorts of things about MobileMe from a usually unmistakable Apple fanboy (Pogue) and a man who has called the iMac “the best desktop PC on the market at many price” (Mossberg), in addition to thousands of unsatisfied customers, former .Mac members and new members of the bandwagon alike, I think it’s pretty clear that they have not “finally got it right” as far as their online services are concerned, as Steve Jobs said at WWDC.
MobileMe’s launch was, as the former .Mac members among us are well aware, a complete disaster that took days to finally get somewhat right. In fact, not all of the launch issues have been worked out even now, two weeks after MobileMe’s initial release.
Chaos and gripes after the break.
Walt Mossberg’s top ten iPhone apps
Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal recently wrote in his column about ten iPhone apps, in the new app store, that he feels are worth checking out. I think it’s a really great “getting started” guide for those who are overwhelmed or otherwise confused about where to start with the app store.

Walt Mossberg’s iPhone 3G review
Walt Mossberg, personal technology columnist for The Wall Street Journal, has been called “the Kingmaker” by Wired because “few reviewers have held so much power to shape the industry’s success and failures.”
Walt aims his reviews at end users rather than techies, and while he always does his best to stay neutral and would never be called a “fanboy” of any particular technology company, his reviews of Apple products have been generally positive, and one of his reviews, where he called the iMac “the finest desktop PC on the market at any price,” was featured in one of Apple’s famous “Get a Mac” ads.
So, what does Walt think of Apple’s new iPhone 3G? Check out his video review after the break.
