I was moderately excited when I heard about CloudOn, a new, free iPad application that purports to let you create, view, and edit files directly in Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint on the tablet. This sounded like pretty good news. However, upon downloading CloudOn and checking out its Word module, I came away disappointed.

OnLive is well-known for bringing games to the iPad, and now it’s going to bring Windows 7. The service is called OnLive Desktop, and you can download the free version on Thursday, January 12th at the App Store. All you need is an iPad or iPad 2 with at least a 1 Mbps Internet connection (1.5-2 Mbps for best results).

The holidays are over and chances are good you had to head back to work this week. CloudOn wants to help with their MS Office app that creates, views and edits Excel, Word and PowerPoint files. Now you can work anywhere. Joy. In case you’ve had enough work, you’ll enjoy the other great apps and games I found, all of which will only be free for a limited time.

Saving your Word for Mac file as a .PDF is a good way to send a document cross platform, or to send it without having anyone else make changes (at least not easily, anyway). That way you can be sure your documents will be in good shape. No matter if it is a party invitation or a presentation for work, this is a great way to make a lossless format, and it’s easy to do. If any of you are still doubting the iPhone’s capability to become a business phone due to the lack of a business application suite, doubt no more. If you have to judge the iPhone’s business capability through such kind of apps—iPhone has one, and it’s called QuickOffice. This great iPhone app has practically all the functionality of Microsoft Word and Excel, including some advanced Microsoft Office features as well. In fact, the only limitation of this app is that it doesn’t handle powerpoint creation and editing.

The Mac BU at Microsoft has acknowledged a security issue, and has released a fix, and plans to release an update.

The problem is that the Microsoft Office Installer changes permissions for the Microsoft Office install and the Automator Library folder to user 502, or the second account created on a given Mac. It’s not a huge problem, because there is no threat if you only have one user, and if you have more than one user, all that they can do is mess with your Office install. They cannot really do anything malicious to your Mac.
