Garmin this week announced plans to release the new DC 30, a completely redesigned GPS dog tracking collar, which updates a similar, older product.

The new collar is more sturdy than its predecessor and its antennas are positioned differently for optimal tracking. Used in conjunction with the Astro 220 receiver, the system can track exactly where your dog is and what it’s doing in dense cover up to seven miles away.

“The new DC 30 collar is designed to stand up to the torturous abuse of hunting dogs,” Dan Bartel, Garmin’s Vice President of Worldwide Sales, said as part of the announcement. “Whether it’s hounds crashing through thick and swampy woods, or bird dogs bounding through dense CRP fields, the DC 30 is made to take the beating that working dogs dish out daily, and the new configuration also makes mounting the collar a cinch while improving reception.”

The DC 30’s main housing is weighted to sit below the dog’s neck while a small, discrete GPS antenna is integrated into the collar strap positioned on top of the dog’s neck. This provides a clear view of satellites with minimal rotation and interference. The transmitter antenna, which has been redesigned for more flexibility and ruggedness, weighs in at 4.1 ounces. The DC 30 is expected to be available in the third quarter of this year.

The Astro GPS Dog Tracking System requires little configuration out of the box and is very simple to use. Once the transmitter and receiver acquire a GPS signal, the receiver automatically informs users the location of their dog. In addition, the Astro can track up to ten dogs per receiver at once with a location update of every five, ten or thirty seconds. The Astro can also be used as a full-featured handheld GPS. The DC 30 collar is included as a part of the Astro GPS Dog Tracking system for a suggested retail price of $649.99. (DC 30 can be purchased separately for $199.99).
