GREG’S PICK OF THE WEEK

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Blu-ray)
Fox | 110 minutes | Price: $39.99

SNL is a must-buy this week but it’s also a tad pricey. On the Blu-ray front, I had high hopes for two new releases but neither is perfect. First is Fox’s DBox-enhanced Master and Commander; I love this film. With improved video and jaw-dropping DTS-HD audio, this one is a technical marvel. However, shame on Fox for casting overboard the excellent bonus materials found on Disc Two of the Collector’s Edition DVD. Instead they’ve opted for a skin and bones high def release and one can only assume a “Collector’s Edition” Blu-ray is forthcoming. Grr. Argh. I have similar complaints about Disney’s Narnia Blu-ray. This underrated film looks and sounds fantastic in high def, but where’s the extended cut of the film from the 4-disc Extended Edition DVD? Grr. Argh. (Watch for a blog on this disturbing trend in the days ahead.)

Instead of those newer titles, my pick of the week goes to the timeless Butch and Sundance. For some interesting notes on the film and its battle-weary video transfer, check out film preservationist Robert Harris’ review over at Home Theater Forum – it’s worth a read. Bottom line: despite its sometimes aged and weathered look, Butch and Sundance have never looked better than they do on this Blu-ray from Fox Home Entertainment.

Tune in next week for Muppets, Secrets and vintage Steve Guttenberg!
