The company behind BlackBerry, Research in Motion, which has seen its stock jump and its consumer-oriented phones enjoy huge success in the last year, is now facing stiff competition in the business realm from Apple’s iPhone, and is at work on a new phone meant to beat back the challenge.

That’s according to a Sunday New York Times piece, which also said Research in Motion is at work on a new 3G smartphone that will be unveiled in May and distributed later in the year. In fact, engineers told the Times that the new phone is referred to internally at the company as “A.K,” for “Apple Killer.”

With the smarphone sector growing quickly, established firms like Research in Motion are now facing competition not only from Apple, but from Google’s forthcoming Android operating system. The BlackBerry maker’s strategy is to keep innovating, and keep making phones with which its customers are satisfied.
