This time last year, baseball fans nationwide were outraged at a tentative deal between Major League Baseball and DirecTV that would have given the satellite TV provider the exclusive rights to the sport’s Extra Innings package. That dispute was eventually resolved to the satisfaction of most fans but now, a year later, baseball fans are upset with DirecTV all over again.
The 2008 baseball season officially began Monday, with the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics starting off with a two-game series in Japan, about a week prior to the start of the season for the other 28 teams. This caused countless fans, especially in the New England area, to wake up at around 6 a.m. on the East Coast to watch the start of the game- but due to a technical glitch with the DirecTV feed of the game, these fans missed out on the opener.
According to the Boston Herald, the problems caused by “temporary technical difficulties” prevented the feeds from ESPN2 and the local sports network New England Sports Network (NESN) from going over through DirecTV. A separate problem, meanwhile, also knocked out service for some Comcast customers in New England.
“We deeply apologize, particularly to Red Sox and A’s fans, for any inconvenience this may have caused,” a DirecTV spokesman said in a statement obtained by the newspaper.
The problems did not apply, the Herald says, to fans watching the games in DirecTV HD.
