DirecTV is set to erase one of its main deficits in its battle with cable, as the satellite television provider will begin offering video-on-demand content for the first time later this year. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the company is currently testing the service, which includes movies, TV shows and other content, with an eye towards a “second quarter” launch.

The service will utilize a combination of DVR technology and broadband connections, the Journal said. From the beginning, though, DirecTV will face a deficit, with considerably less content available than either most cable companies or Verizon’s FiOS service.

The service will launch with about 3,000 titles available, compared to more than 10,000 currently available on Comcast’s on-demand cable service.

Do you think DirecTV can handle on-demand? Talk about it in the E-Gear forums.
