LAS VEGAS- At a Palm Casino nightclub packed Monday night with dealers and journalists Mitsubishi finally took the sheets off a technology the company had been talking about for more than two years. The laser TV, a rear projection technology that replaces the lamps with lasers, displays twice the color gamut of any other current television technology and uses much less power, said Mitsubishi’s Max Wasinger. “Nothing can reproduce the color intensity of the laser,” he added, and noted that laser manufacture is one of Mitsubishi’s core competencies. The 65-inch, 1080p widescreen HDTV model shown was about 10-inchs deep and is expected to be part of a line of laser TVs released to retail sometime in 2008, though the company wouldn’t say how many products would be in the line beyond stating “more than one.” Mitsubishi is focused initially on the specialty retailer market with products in the 60-inch and above range. Complete details on the products’ specifications, including pricing, were not released.

In addition to unveiling the laser TV, the company conducted 3D demonstrations on the unit using REALD technology that was among the best 3D image this writer has ever seen on a television. The system requires that the content be specially encoded and run from a Blu-ray player to a special 3D set-top-box and viewed with special glasses. A REALD spokesperson said several major Hollywood studios are committed to producing feature films in 3D.
