In a move that creates the world’s third-largest vendor of PCs, the Taiwanese conglomerate Acer, Inc. has reached an agreement to purchase Gateway, Inc., the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The deal, the Journal reported, values Gateway at $710 million. It has already been approved by both companies’ boards, and is expected to close in December. When completed, the deal will lift the combined company above Lenovo/IBM to the #3 spot among PC vendors, behind HP and Dell.

Gateway also said, Friday, that it plans to exercise right of first refusal to purchase another PC maker, Packard Bell. Lenovo had earlier announced plans to buy a stake in that company.
