Sony has given its strongest indication yet that a price cut for the struggling Playstation 3 console may be in the offing this year.

Howard Stringer, Sony’s chairman and CEO, told the Financial Times Friday that Sony is looking to “refine” the price of the PS3, while praising the lower-cost business model of Nintendo’s much more-successful Wii console. Stringer said that Sony will make a decision on the matter in time to craft a retail strategy for the Christmas sales season.

The comments come a week after Sony was reported to be cutting more than 100 jobs from the U.S. headquarters of its gaming operation. An announced price cut of Sony’s newest Blu-ray Disc player indicated that the PS3’s price would likely drop as well.

  1. The PS3 ia a great and entertaining system but the thing that bummed me out was that you cant play music while playing a game! Will anything as far as updates go allow this function?
