Every year, the editors of E-Gear magazine selects the top 40 products out of everything we’ve reviewed over the past 12 months. It’s a difficult job because so many products standout each year. As part of our selection process we consider a product’s performance, uniqueness, ingenuity, features and value. We consider this not only a review of the best of our product reviews, but a round-up of some of the best new gadgets and gear of the year.
This year we’ve also done something a little different. We’ve added one more award: Product of the Year. We hadn’t set out to do it; in fact, it had a few people in the office scratching their heads wondering what we were up to. But to wait until next year to give it a Top 40 Award wouldn’t do justice to the product. This year we’re designating the Sony PlayStation 3 E-Gear’s Product of the Year. Sure, it’s not the first next-generation high definition game console—Xbox 360 beat Sony to it, and gets and Editor’s Choice Award for it—but the PlayStation 3 warrants this award for much more. First, it’s an exceptional video game machine, with Cell processor-power graphics and excellent free online gaming. Next it’s a very good digital media manager for digital photos and digital music. Third, it allows easy living room web browsing via its built-in web browser and Internet connection. Finally, it’s a high-definition Blu-ray disc player right out of the box, bringing next-generation video to millions. This is a combination that’s hard to ignore.
