Now that you’ve got that spontaneously raw movie file or meticulously crafted and edited classic video clip, what are you going to do with it? A number of Web sites have gained traction as galleries for the video amateurs of our time. They will gladly host your digicam video clips, and at no charge in most cases.
www.blogger.com – perhaps the most well known of the DIY blog creation sites. Free of charge. However, at this time, only still images can be posted. But links to other sites that feature your video clips can be easily added.
www.grouper.com and www.friendster.com – these are “community” sites that are operated as a co-branded file sharing application. Grouper.com is similar in function to other file sharing sites such as Napster, Kazaa and Limewire. Grouper.com and Friendster.com are good choices if your objective is to make your video clips downloadable to the whole wide world. You will have to download proprietary software from Grouper.com to enable video uploads.
www.metacafe.com – another popular site that is video-only, making it an excellent no-nonsense vehicle for your masterpiece. Feedback from viewers is highly encouraged on the site. Also requires the downloading of proprietary software to facilitate the uploading process.
www.mac.com – Apple enthusiasts will always have their dot.Mac accounts for blog and Web site creation, which is comforting given that many of the other sites we mention here do not support the Macintosh. However, there is a yearly fee for access to Apple’s online web authoring programs (currently $100) and for the use of server space.
www.youtube.com – probably the most oft-visited video posting site, perhaps because it is video-only and straightforward in its simplicity and ease of use. Not download-friendly, though, and most look but don’t touch. But a good choice in terms of accessing a large viewing audience.
www.myspace.com – the king of the community sites, of which video hosting is but one of many aspects. If it’s a mass audience you seek, this is a good choice, but you’ll just be another face in the crowd.
www.geocities.yahoo.com – another personal web and blog creation site, the basic set up is free, but adding more space and features will tack on anywhere from $4.95 to $8.95 per month.
www.hometown.aol.com – For AOL members only. Blog and web site creation tools, free server space.
