Aside from announcing that their digital cameras now all have larger and brighter screens (2.5 and 3-inch LCD screens), faster flash recharging and longer battery life, the company used their press conference to reveal that their Exilim EZ850, 600 and 60 models now all feature an eBay Best Shot mode, optimized for taking pictures of unwanted junk to sell on eBay. Essentially what it does is knock down the image resolution to 2 megapixels so you don’t have to figure out how to do that in the PC software—a task many people still haven’t mastered. Casio noted that there are about 6 million new items entered into eBay everyday, so they expect this to be a popular feature. New Casio cameras also will feature anti-shake, MPEG-4 video, an LED video light and a continuous flash mode where users can shoot three flash pics in one second. www.casio.com
Samsung PMP Camera
Samsung showed off their Digimax i6 camera which is not only a slim pocket-sized 6 megapixel shooter, but it’s also a personal media player for watching MPEG-4 video and listening to MP3 music files. It will record MPEG-4 video like a camcorder onto SD cards, but users will need a PC to load movies or TV programs onto it. The 2.3-inch screen will even display movie subtitles. It’s also got an anti-shake feature that works in video recording and still picture taking modes. $299. www.samsungcamera.com
Joby Gorillapod
One of the neatest things I saw on the show floor was the Joby Gorillapod, a 6-inch, 2-oune mini-tripod with flexible octopus-like legs that will wrap around just about anything. It can attach onto tree limbs, fence posts, chair backs or just sit on a table top, keeping the camera stable. It’s odd leg design (it looks like the landing legs of an alien space ship) provide it a lot of strength and gripping power. It’s available at stores or online for $24.95, but Joby will drop $3 if you order from them and elect to receive it without the environmentally-unfriendly blister package. www.joby.com
Nikon Gets the Shakes Out
Nikon’s Coolpix P3 8-megapixel camera includes a vibration reduction mode for taking care of your morning coffee jitters. Vibration reduction, and similar features from other companies, are appearing in cameras from numerous manufacturers this year, and should solve a lot of users’ fuzzy photo problems. This 3X zoom cam also includes a Wi-Fi feature for wirelessly sending your photos to a PC. www.nikon.com
FujiFilm is Light Sensitive
The FujiFilm FinPix F30, which uses the company’s 6.3 megapixel Super CCD sensor, has an extreme low light sensitivity with an ISO that goes to an impressiv 3,200 when most digital point-and-shoots only reach the 500-800 ISO. It’s also got picture stabilization and an i-Flash system which optimizes the flash to the exposure level. This should be a great low-light camera. www.fujifilm.com
PNY Attache
The memory product company has added a pocketable 8 gigabyte mini-hard drive to it’s stable of Attache flash drives. Max File Attache is not much bigger than a pack of matches, and features an integrated USB connector that hides inside the unit when it’s not being used. It requires no external power and has a data transfer rate comparable to flash drives. www.pny.com
Canon Widesceen Camcorder
Canon’s newest DVD recording camcorder, the DC40, includes a 10x optical zoom, 4.3 megapixel CCD—making it ideal for taking still photos as well, and a 2.7-inch widesceen LCD screen perfect for the camera’s default widescreen shooting (it can also shoot in standard 4:3 mode for non-HDTV owners). There’s a built-in video light for low-light recording that doubles as a still photo flash. $899. www.canon.com
