Amazon.com used a literary heavyweight to herald the launch Monday of its second-generation Kindle lightweight electronic book portal.
At a media event in New York City, author and Kindle aficionado Stephen King read an excerpt from a novella, "Ur," whose plot features mention of the device. The work is available for pre-order today – as is the Kindle 2, said amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.
The device will be available starting Feb. 24 at $359 through the Web site.
The newest device is 25 percent thinner than the #1 selling 3G mobile phone on the market, at .36-inch thick, and weighs 10.2 ounces, he said. Its display betters the Gen 1 model with 16 shades of gray versus four, and it offers 20 percent faster page turns and 25 percent longer battery life, along with seven times more storage – translating to 1,500 books.
