LG Electronics and Netflix have announced a groundbreaking new player: the first ever to both play Blu-ray Discs and stream movies from Netflix’s library. The player, the BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player, was to be introduced and demonstrated Thursday night at LG’s 2008 Summer Line Show in New York.
The product is set to arrive in the fall; pricing information was not released.
The player, which includes the BD Live feature, will upconvert standard DVDs to 1080p, and also make 12,000 Netflix movies available.
“As Blu-ray player sales expected to triple in three years, consumers are craving content and seeking a premium home entertainment experience,” Teddy Hwang, LG’s U.S. president, said as part of the announcement. “The BD300 is another LG industry first and provides consumers with an advanced high-def disc player with unparalleled flexibility and networked access for services such as Netflix.”
The companies had announced a partnership in January at International CES in Las Vegas. Netflix has since introduced set-top boxes through Roku and Microsoft, but the LG player is the first to contain a Blu-ray component.
