Video game sales in the U.S. dropped 7.6 percent in November, as hardware sales plunged 13.4 percent and software sales fell 3.1 percent. The overall sales were measured at $2.7 billion.

While the Nintendo Wii was the top-selling console, the PlayStation 3 was the only one of the big three consoles to show year-over-year growth. However, combined sales of the DS and DSi were measured at 1.7 million, ahead of all three major consoles.

The Xbox and PS3 versions of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" took the top two spots in software sales, beating out the Wii’s "New Super Mario Bros."

Nintendo said Friday that it sold nearly three million combined units of the Nintendo Wii and DSi in the month of December, taking the top two spots in sales rankings and bringing the Wii’s installation base in the U.S. to 23 million.

"Nintendo products top Amazon.com’s Most Wished For and Most Gifted lists for video games, and Wii remains at or near the top of the most-searched for video game terms on Yahoo!," the company’s American executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, Cammie Dunaway, said in a statement. "As families and friends gather for the holidays, Nintendo games offer the best shared experiences."
