Worldwide PC shipments grew in the third quarter of this year, while Acer overtook Dell to take the #2 spot in market share behind HP. That’s the conclusion of a pair of surveys released Thursday, by Gartner and IDC.

Gartner reported a 0.5 percent increase to 80.9 million units from the same period last year, while IDC showed a 2.3 percent gain. The IDC survey reported 2.5 percent increase in the U.S.

The Gartner survey showed HP with 19.9 percent of the worldwide market and Acer- spurred by 23.6 percent growth- grabbing 15.4 percent to Dell’s 12.8. IDC showed the companies with 20.2, 14 and 12.7 percent, respectively. Both surveys had Lenovo and Toshiba in the fourth and fifth spots.

"Despite the ongoing mix of gloom and caution on the economic front, the PC market continues to rebound quickly," Loren Loverde, program director for IDC`s Tracker Program, said as part of the announcement. "The competitive landscape, the transition to portables, new and low-power designs, growth in retail and consumer segments, and the impact of falling prices are all reflected in the gains by HP and Acer, as well as overall market growth."

"The consumer market continued to lead unit shipment growth, driven by low priced mobile PCs,” Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa said in the release. “Ongoing price declines continue to be a major issue in the PC industry. PC vendor performance cannot be determined solely by unit market share gains as related revenues and margin performance are key to surviving in very competitive market.”
