HIGHLIGHTS:
Australia - Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman serve up some epic-sized entertainment in this latest opus from Moulin Rouge Director Baz Luhrmann. Australia looks and sounds fantastic on Blu-ray. Beverly Hills Chihuahua – If it weren’t for Admiral Adama’s (Edward James Olmos) presence in this, BHC would never have seen the inside of my Blu-ray player. Olmos can’t save the film, but I have to give Disney credit for this gorgeous 1080p transfer. Kids should enjoy perusing the handful of extras on this BD LIVE-enabled disc, including a high def segment entitled "Pet Pals" which focuses on the film’s voice cast.
I’ve Loved You So Long – Props to Sony for continuing to bring less mainsteam fare to the high def format. This French film features Kristin Scott Thomas as a woman just released from a 15-year prison sentence. Sony’s Blu-ray features deleted scenes and a director commentary.
Watchmen - Before you experience Zack Snyder’s ambitious big screen take on Alan Moore’s "Watchmen," remind yourself why the graphic novel became so insanely popular in the first palce. Warner’s "Complete Motion Comic" features minimal animation as one voice reads "Watchmen" word for word, in its entirety. If you enjoy books on tape and/or the source material, there are worse ways to spend an evening. Kudos to Warner for bringing this unique title to Blu-ray. When you’re done with this, if you’re still hungry for more "Watchmen," be sure to check out The Mindscape of Alan Moore, available on DVD from Disinformation.
Wonder Woman – Warner decided to bring this 2009 animated film straight to video, but from all accounts I’ve read, this one is not to be missed. Now if only the upcoming live action film would get off the ground. (And since you asked, my vote for who should play the amazon princess superhero? Gina Torres, from TV’s "Firefly" of course. Just ask Wash: "Have you ever been with a warrior woman?")
Greg’s Pick of the Week:
Silence of the Lambs (Blu-ray) MGM Home Entertainment | Rated R | 118 minutes | $34.99
It’s hard to believe it’s been eighteen years since Anthony Hopkins’ donned the straitjacket and face mask for his chilling turn as Hannibal Lecter; neither fava beans nor Chianti have tasted the same since. The suspenseful thriller garnered Best Picture and Best Director (Jonathan Demme) Oscars in addition to statues for both Hopkins and Jodie Foster.
MGM brings the modern classic to Blu-ray with a host of extras, including two HD featurettes entitled "Breaking the Silence" and Understanding the Madness."
