The film that ushered in the 3D blockbuster revolution in theaters last year is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray- but not in a 3D-ready version. At least, not yet.
James Cameron's “Avatar,” the futuristic sci-fi thriller that has become the highest-grossing film of all time, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray April 22 by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Even as major manufacturers begin rolling out their first 3D TVs and home theater products this month “Avatar,” which has wowed audiences in 3D for the past three months, will only be available in 2D on its first release.
In keeping with the film's ecological message, the release is timed to occur on Earth Day. Cameron also said this week that his previous film and the previous all-time box office champ, 1997's “Titanic,” will be released in a new 3D version in 2012.
