Nintendo Wii owners will be able to watch their Netflix queues through the console starting in the spring, the companies announced Wednesday. The video-rental service had already been available through the Wii's two same-generation rivals, the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3.
The service will be available free of charge to those who are already Netflix subscribers. It will require a Netflix instant-streaming disc, similar to the one that works with the PS3.
“The Wii console is the social hub around which friends and family members gather to play games and have fun. Soon both new and longtime Wii owners will enjoy the benefits of Netflix – and a variety of informational and entertainment options – by being Netflix members and connecting their consoles to the Internet,” Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo's U.S. president, said as part of the announcement.
