Sales of LED-based LCD TVs, which began in earnest in 2009, will take off next year, with the market for the devices set to explode next year and rise even further in the coming years. That’s according to research released this week by DisplayBank.

According to DisplayBank’s LED LCD TV Roadmap and Market Forecast, 3.2 million units of LED TVs were shipped in 2009- up from around 200,000 the year before-  a number that is expected to jump to nearly 26 million in 2010. That number, in turn, is seen doubling to 51.9 million in 2011, reaching 129.1 million in 2013.

The 2010 figure is expected to make up 16 percent of the overall LCD market, DisplayBank said.

In terms of brands, Samsung is the leader in expected 2010 shipments with around 10 million, ahead of Sony, LG and Sharp, who are all in the 5-7 million range. The next step down, in the 3-5 million unit range, are Philips, Toshiba and Vizio.
