Google's Android operating system has ridden the popularity of several new devices to new status as the #1 mobile operating system in the U.S., NPD Group reported Wednesday.
The research firm found that Android is on 33 percent of smart phones sold in the second quarter, ahead of Research in Motion's BlackBerry (28 percent) and Apple's iPhone (22 percent.) BlackBerry had held the lead in every quarter of the survey since 2007.
In terms of carriers, Verizon maintains its lead with 33 percent of the total U.S. mobile phone market, followed by AT&T 25 percent), Sprint (12 percent) and T-Mobile (11 percent.)
“For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers,” Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD, said as part of the announcement. “While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch.”
Within the Android category, Motorola's Droid was the #1 seller, followed by four HTC devices (the Droid Incredible, EVO 4G, Hero and Droid Eris.)
