With all the snow we’ve been getting here in Philadelphia the past few months and being couped up in the house for days on end, having product to review like the JBL Creature III Speaker System has been nothing short of a godsend.

When I first saw the Creature III speakers, I thought they looked incredibly cool, albeit something out of a Steven Spielberg movie.

These very modern, but funky looking plug-and-play speakers are available in either black or white, glow from the bottom and feature soft-touch tactile controls, which require only a slight touch to increase or decrease volume or mute the system. It also has the ability to remember the volume settings in use when the system was last used. The system comes complete with a subwoofer and two satellite speakers that really seem to fit well next to any gaming or computer system (Mac and PC), and is also compatible with analog stereos, digital music players and personal CD players, to really give you that full multimedia sound you had always only dreamed about…until now.

Audio quality for the Creature III was really top notch, due in part to the incorporation of the latest in Odyssey transducer technology, concealed within the subwoofer and satellite speakers.

I listened to some Pandora radio on the Internet and found that the speakers performed fairly well in both the low and mid ranges. The overall sound was a bit tinny at times, but nothing too extreme. Vocals sounded crisp and not muddy at all. The 75mm subwoofer driver performs extremely well, achieving a nice bottom sound without distortion, while the 40mm satellite drivers keep distortion to a minimum in cases where I had the volume at the absolute maximum level. Very rarely will you have the volume at such a ridiculous level, especially if you choose to use the system with your computer, but in all other cases where the volume was at a comfortable level, the sound was clear.

My only gripe would have to be that the system lacks a remote control. I had to keep getting up and down to adjust the volume or to turn the system “on” or “off”. This was an inconvenience, and may be a problem for your typical couch potato, but it wasn’t a major problem for me.

In conclusion, this system is not for the high-end speaker enthusiast. However, for an MSRP of $129.99, it is certainly worth a second look. It’s stylish, makes an ideal gift for any hardcore gamer or college student and is the perfect addition to any desk, dorm room or small living area. Oh, and most importantly, it produces a great sound! EG
