Preorders of Apple's long-awaited iPad device, which began Friday, amounted to over 100,000 in the first 24 hours, according to one analyst.

According to Fortune's Brainstorm Tech blog, analyst Daniel Tello estimated that 25,000 of the devices were sold per hour in the opening hours, before slowing to around 1,000 per hour by Sunday. Other estimates had Apple moving 120,000 of the devices the first day, including 51,000 in the first two hours.

The WiFi version of the iPad will begin shipping April 3, with the 3G edition set to follow later in April.

  1. Apple could come out with a dull fishing hook (the “iHook”) and book 100,000 orders in a day. It is the blessing of being Apple… “IF its an Apple dull fishing hook it has to be great”.

The proof of success will come down the road when the crazies are done spending their money!
