A new survey of U.S. consumers has found that more than half of those asked are not interested in buying Apple's new iPad device.

According to the survey by Retrevo that was introduced last week, more than 80 percent of respondents had heard about the iPad in the weeks after it was announced. However, of those asked, 52 percent replied that they had heard about the device but were not interested in buying it, while an additional 18 percent hadn't heard and weren't interested.

Of the remaining respondents, 21 percent said they were interested but needed to hear more, while just 9 percent said they thought they would buy one.

The survey also asked whether those who had heard about the iPad felt they “need” one, 61 percent said “no,” 34 percent answered either “maybe” or “I don't know,” while just 5 percent said “definitely.”

Retrevo had reported interest in the device prior to the announcement, when it was merely rumored.
