AT&T announced this week that it will release five Android phones this year, including Dell's first smartphone in the North American market. Other devices will include AT&T-exclusive phones from HTC and Motorola.

In addition, AT&T announced an initiative to offer all major smartphone app stores, and the establishment of a new AT&T Virtual Innovation lab.

“Today some AT&T customers can take advantage of more than 100,000 apps – but only if they have the right handset,” AT&T Mobility president and CEO Ralph de la Vega said in a statement. “Our goal is to bring more apps to millions more of our customers who want convenient access to the market's hottest apps. At the same time, in the future, we plan to go well beyond mobile devices to spur apps development.”

AT&T was not a part of the Android Open Handset Alliance at its launch two years ago.
